When posed with visiting Disneyland, Universal Studios or Hawaii for her 10th birthday, Maddie Hedrick had another destination in mind – WSU’s Veterinary Teaching Hospital. Hedrick, an aspiring veterinarian from Lake Tapps, Washington, toured the hospital for her birthday with her grandparents Bill Hedrick (‘77 Business Management) and Stephanie Hedrick (‘77 Business Management). The couple met during their studies at WSU Pullman. “I just really like animals and I wanted to come to WSU and see how the whole college works,” said Hedrick, who mentioned she plans to attend WSU for veterinary school. #WSUVetMed #VeterinaryMedicine #VeterinarianToBe #WSU #GoCougs Read the story check out our full photo gallery: https://lnkd.in/g_xk-fAd

This red-tailed hawk is wildlife case #926 this year at #WSUVetMed, with the total wildlife patients treated sitting at 1,009 (shattering the old record of 632). After being struck by a car in Pullman in September, our wildlife intern Dr. Taylor Haefs released this female, juvenile red-tailed hawk earlier this month. On examination, the hawk was dehydrated, missing feathers on her left wing, suffered a skin wound on the right foot, and had damage to her left eye. With a few weeks of treatment and rehabilitation, the red-tail passed her pre-release exam and was banded and released. Thanks, Dr. Haefs, veterinary assistant Hannah Tarlyn, and the whole exotics/wildlife team for their role in caring for wildlife throughout our entire region. #RedTailedHawk #Wildlife #BirdsOfPrey #WSUVetMed #WSU #GoCougs

To ensure #WSUVetMed veterinary oncologists continue providing cancer care while also training the next generation of practitioners, one of the largest anonymous gifts in #WSU history — $6 million — will establish a faculty chair in Dr. Rance Sellon’s name. #Give #DonorImpact #GoCougs More about the Dr. Rance Sellon Endowed Chair in Veterinary Clinical Oncology: https://lnkd.in/gEEsUus9

After a frantic, five-hour drive through the night from her home in Montana to #WSUVetMed, Rena Shockey braced for the worst as the doors of her horse trailer swung open. Inside, a 24-hour-old Shire filly lay limp, barely clinging to life. “Opening the back door was one of the scariest moments in my life,” Shockey said. “We honestly didn’t think she was going to make the drive to Pullman.” Read how #WSU veterinarians took a critical case and turned it into a life-saving story: https://lnkd.in/gczB4DHE

The Washington Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory (WADDL), a vital branch of #WSUVetMed, safeguards the health of agricultural animals, companion animals, aquatic animals and wildlife through diagnostic testing and consultation in an effort to stop pandemics before they start. In case you missed it: The Spokesman-Review's Amanda Sullender toured the lab this week and wrote about its state and national impact. Read the full story: https://lnkd.in/dmggiW38

#WSU Spanish professor Sonia Lopez-Lopez knows the challenges a trip to the veterinary clinic presents for a client who only speaks Spanish. With Spanish as her first language, Lopez-Lopez’ own first-hand communication breakdowns were top of mind when she chose to teach the language to WSU veterinary students. “I have seen the struggle of veterinarians, workers, and clients because of the language barrier and it’s important to train students in all the areas of the language so they are prepared for those conversations when they are professionals. That’s what this course is all about,” she said. #NationalHispanicHeritageMonth #LearnSomethingNew #WSUVetMed #GoCougs Read the full story: https://lnkd.in/gggV9_g8

Washington State University researchers have been awarded a $2.1 million grant from the The National Institutes of Health to continue a nearly five-decades-long research effort aimed at gaining a better understanding of sperm production and regulation in mammals. The five-year grant will take the project, already the longest continuously funded NIH research at WSU, through its 49th year. The grant brings the project total to more than $30 million since its inception in 1976 and could lead to new approaches to male contraception. “There are not many grants that get into their 40s,” said Michael Griswold, WSU Regents professor emeritus and former director of the WSU College of Veterinary Medicine’s School of Molecular Biosciences. “I am very proud of all the students and postdocs that made the lab so successful over this very long period of time, and I am proud of the contributions we made and am anxious to do more.” #WSUVetMed #WSU #GoCougs Read the full story: https://lnkd.in/gKxYy8Kj
