Statler College of Engineering and Mineral Resources graduate Xiujuan Chen has been working toward a future where zinc, not lithium, powers rechargeable batteries: “Lithium-ion batteries pose a risk of fire because of the flammable electrolyte and the nature of lithium itself. You definitely don’t want your phone exploding in your pocket or your electric vehicle catching fire. Zinc is a strong alternative because it’s safe, and it’s very low-cost and particularly suitable for large-scale energy storage applications. We have abundant zinc resources and zinc is easily recyclable.” https://lnkd.in/gBH8gdq2

We had a great time at the 2024 IEEE International Conference on Smart Mobility, Niagara Falls, ON, Sept. 16-18. Our WVU Mountaineer (F1TENTH car) autonomously raced with teams from the USA, Canada and China led by amazing students, researchers and professionals. WVU Mountaineer F1TENTH courage survived two from-the-back crashes, stood its ground, trusted its algorithms and received Second Place in the F1TENTH race!
