The national reading test scores haven't improved in two decades, and the gap between socioeconomic groups remains evident. While recent reform efforts have focused on crucial foundational skills, more needs to be done to close the knowledge gap. The answer? Changing our approach to reading comprehension to factor in a key element: knowledge learned from the environment we grow up in. Join host John Carroll to hear from education journalist and author, Natalie Wexler, as she shares research, insights, and perspectives on how we can give all students access to the kind of knowledge that enables reading comprehension and general learning. Empower students with the tools they need to succeed! This study shares strategies to help students excel, especially first-generation students facing unique challenges. From the Pomodoro Technique to Dual Coding, these research-backed methods can revolutionize learning outcomes.
Developing self-regulatory behaviors is crucial for college students, especially for first-generation students. However, all students can benefit from instruction in these skill sets. My dissertation conducted in 1997 found that study skills instruction, including behavior management practices, positively impacted first-semester college GPA. For our "digital natives," these habits are more important than ever. That's why I partnered with Innovative Educators to create an Executive Functioning Series to help students develop these essential behaviors. XanEdu, Inc.. Amy Baldwin. Ready to empower your students with a curriculum that resonates with their interests and addresses curriculum gaps all while meeting state standards? Join us for an inspiring conversation with Erin Conklin, Director of K-12 Social Studies, to discuss how she is addressing curriculum gaps in one of the nation's largest school districts. With around 130,000 students and 200 schools, it can be challenging to meet ever-changing standards, retain teachers, and meet all of the needs of their diverse student population. Learn how Erin worked with XanEdu to create a customized social studies book that met the required state legislation and standards while providing factual and high-quality instructional materials that included local history and landmarks. Not only did this textbook address curriculum gaps but it sparked interest and passion in the students to learn more about the areas they grew up in. In addition to creating a customized textbook, Erin discusses how she ensures clear and effective communication across the many schools she works with making sure teachers have all the information and resources they need to create engaging curriculum and learning environments for their students. This is the first episode in our four episode series where we talk with education leaders and thought leaders about how customizing textbooks can help with meeting state standards while creating engaging high quality content for students both in K-12 and Higher Education. https://hubs.la/Q02nD_6T0
