Xendee was recently featured in the Climate Change Business Journal including an interview with our Co-Founder and Chief Technology Officer, Dr. Michael Stadler on the growing threat of climate change and the industry’s efforts to combat it. This includes the wide scale development and deployment of electric vehicles, microgrids, and complex DER systems. During this interview, Michael addresses the challenges in each of these domains and explains how Xendee is building features and expanding its product suite to meet these challenges. Finally, the article concludes with a history of Xendee, the market opportunity that led to our creation, and the next stages for the Xendee Corporation. “It became very clear that techno-economic assessments and distribution system modeling go hand-in-hand with Microgrid and DER projects. Also, to make the technology accessible and widely used so that hundreds or thousands of projects can be handled effectively and efficiently,  a  smart  graphical user interface with a lot of database driven support was needed. In 2018, Xendee was created for that reason. Since then, the final stage - the control of microgrids and DERs - has also been added.” - Dr. Michael Stadler. #Xendee #CCBJ #ClimateChange #EVs #Microgrids #DER #DERDeployment #Sustainability #EmissionReduction

DataCenterDynamics: Xendee & University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign Deliver Phased Approach to Power Data Centers with Renewables and Advanced Nuclear Xendee was recently highlighted in the publication DatacenterDynamics, exploring our project with the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) to develop distributed energy solutions that include Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) integrated with renewables to power data centers with reliable carbon free energy. With data centers projected to demand 35GW of power by the end of the decade, innovative energy solutions are needed now more than ever. To meet this growing demand, Xendee and UIUC have developed a phased approach for powering data centers with distributed energy that matches growing energy needs with the availability and cost of each solution. This phased approach leverages Xendee’s expertise in distributed energy solutions and the historical power data from UIUC's Blue Waters supercomputer as a model for optimizing power configurations for data centers. The platform will allow operators to blend renewable technologies like solar and wind with future-forward solutions such as SMRs, delivering reliable, resilient, and low-carbon power. SMRs, still in early stages, show great promise for powering data centers with significant energy demands. This collaboration, supported by the U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Electricity Microgrid Program, will optimize the integration of renewables, storage, and advanced nuclear tech—paving the way for sustainable and scalable energy solutions in the data center industry. Effective Distributed Energy Resources and Microgrid Modeling for Utilities As power demand and the need for energy resiliency rise, utilities are looking to Distributed Energy Resources (DER) and microgrids as key solutions. Whether it's alleviating overloaded infrastructure, supporting remote areas, or accommodating increased demand (such as EV charging stations), these technologies are becoming critical for modern energy systems. As part of our efforts to address these issues, Xendee will be joining CEATI, a utility only interest group offering a venue for members to share experiences in critical areas of power generation, transmission and distribution for an upcoming webinar on microgrid modeling for utilities. CEATI facilitates collaborative R&D projects, customized workshops and training programs, benchmarking, webinars, and industry conferences that bring together leaders and practitioners to learn from each other and outside experts.  Additionally, CEATI's library of 2,200+ technical reports and guidance documents reflects more than 35 years of client-driven research. This webinar is a members only event, but will be covering: > The role of DER and microgrids in supporting grid resilience. > Real-world use cases for feeder load reduction, disaster response, and more. > Key considerations for accurately modeling microgrids and DER. > How to leverage Xendee to quickly model scenarios and find optimal solutions. Case Study Spotlight: Cascadia Renewables + Thurston County Public Health We’re excited to share how Cascadia Renewables leveraged Xendee's microgrid modeling platform to enhance resiliency at Thurston County Public Health. With critical services for West coast communities threatened by tsunamis, wildfires, and earthquakes, Cascadia Renewables, is often asked to conduct microgrid feasibility studies to ensure that facilities can maintain power during emergencies and continue to provide life saving care. During this study for Thurston County, Cascadia Renewables was able to: > Optimally size solar PV, BESS, and generator systems. > Reduce generator run times and fuel consumption. > Create redundancy for backup loads, including medical refrigerators. > Model extended outage events for maximum autonomy. Running optimizations within the Xendee software platform was an integral part of Cascadia Renewables' feasibility study, which included technology sizing and detailed dispatch charts showcasing how the energy demand would be met during an outage. Using Xendee, they were able to provide a conceptual design that met or exceeded all three project goals. Xendee and UIUC Powering Data Centers with Renewables and Advanced Nuclear We are thrilled to announce that Xendee is partnering with the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) to develop low-carbon, reliable energy solutions for powering data centers. Together, we're integrating renewable energy and Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) to meet the growing power demand from AI and data centers, which are projected to reach 8% of total U.S. power demand by 2030. This phased approach will leverage Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) initially and allow for the smooth integration of advanced nuclear technologies as they become available. Our collaboration with UIUC is supported by real-world data from the Blue Waters supercomputer facility, providing a valuable foundation for optimizing microgrid solutions for data centers of all types. “Our partnership with Xendee enables us to dig into the details of optimality based on varied, and sometimes conflicting, objectives of economics, reliability, and decarbonization,” said Dr. Timothy Grunloh, NPRE Principal Research Scientist at UIUC. This initiative is supported by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Microgrid Program and aims to enhance the resilience, efficiency, and sustainability of data center operations.
