Why can't I "just translate the words"? Ever heard the phrase "lost in translation"? That's precisely what can happen when you rely solely on word-for-word translations, as demonstrated by this viral Google Translate meme. As a professional interpreter, the words I dread the most on the job are: "Interpreter, please just translate the words" when I ask for clarification of the context. You see, an interpreter's job is not just to translate individual words but to convey the intended meaning of the message accurately. #Context is everything, and it can dramatically change the interpretation of a conversation. In the example above, the phrase "cover me" could refer to various situations, such as providing support, protection, or even just holding someone's place in line. This is why interpreters must have a deep understanding of both the source and target languages, as well as cultural nuances and idiomatic expressions. The Chinese lunar calendar marks the start of autumn earlier, on August 7 this year. In contrast, the Western autumnal equinox occurs more than a month later, on September 22, 2024, in the Northern Hemisphere. When no direct equivalent exists in the target language, find a similar context and fitting expression. 🌍✨ Once, I interpreted a presentation on the US Constitution for Chinese lawmakers. When asked to compare the US and Chinese legal systems, the speaker humorously replied, "It's not about picking the prettiest hammer, but the one that actually hits the nail." This reminded me of Deng Xiaoping's famous quote during China's 1980s economic reforms: 'Black cat, white cat, a good cat catches mice.' Interpreters' Corner: The Treasure Trove of Medical Terms Interpreters are a special class of collectors: we collect new words and terms. Any self-respecting interpreter would have their most treasured black book, kept in a special place only they can access. It is called a personal glossary. This glossary can be handwritten or digital. When you flip it open, each term tells a story. This one is from a near-miss moment, that one is from a heated discussion among colleagues, and that one was a surprise find from Dr. House. The excitement we experience is no less than that of art collectors, stamp collectors, or Air Jordan collectors, except that we don't have to pay a penny for it. Today's entry is inspired by a session about sciatica. Somehow, I decided to review a picture of the ischium while waiting for the doctor, out of boredom. The doctor didn't use any of the terms down below. But who knows when you will run into them next? The pubic bone, for example, is often brought up in trimester pregnancy consults. Oh, do you know the sacrum was considered holy? Why? We will look into it next time. There are many, many stories about medical terms. The fascinating origins from Greek and Latin!
