About us

Opened to the public in 1993, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts (YBCA) is San Francisco’s center for art and progress. We believe that artists, creative workers, and culture-bearers are uniquely equipped to interrogate our world’s hardest challenges by bringing storytelling, curiosity, and creativity together with social, racial, and economic justice. Mission: To be a gathering space for creative expression that fosters meaningful connection for all. Vision: To be a catalyst of creative exploration, expression and innovation that empowers artists, inspires community and drives lasting social change. Our values • Belonging: We believe the arts are for everyone. • Inclusive Collaboration: We are stronger together. • Optimism: Art has the power to inspire change. • Curiosity: We believe that learning is at the center of all artistic expression.

With support from the California Arts Council, #YBCA provided 48 Bay Area artists with a living wage for over a year as they partnered with local nonprofits on creative collaborations. Known as the #CreativeCorpsInitiative, each artist led a project to inspire and uplift their communities — focused on civic engagement, climate justice, community wellness, or social justice. In celebration of their work, we’re showcasing highlights from their creative projects in our galleries from Friday, August 16-Sunday, September 15. Discover what these artists created across every county and region of the Bay Area. → https://bit.ly/3WsD6EZ

    • A collage of images featuring two main repetitive scenes. One scene shows a long-haired person lying on a blanket with scattered pink flowers. The second scene depicts the same person outdoors, partially concealed behind tall grass. The layout creates a grid pattern, blending nature and restful themes.

We are honored to announce the Mendsmith Project by artist Nick Dong. This project began after Dong created a new jewelry piece by combining a friend's wedding rings following her husband's passing. As part of “Nick Dong: 11 to 88,” #YBCA invites you to participate in this project by submitting your story and the objects you’d like to "mend” into a new commemoration. Between 10 and 15 submissions will be selected for Nick Dong and California College of the Arts students to combine onsite at YBCA from July 29 to August 18. Share your submission by Friday, July 19 → https://bit.ly/3S6fdQS

    • Nick Dong wearing a headlamp focused on examining electronic circuit boards spread out on a table, in a dimly lit room illuminated by blue light.
    • A piece of paper labeled 'Audrey & Michael' displaying various jewelry pieces: a necklace with a circular pendant, a floral-patterned white gold engagement ring, two gold wedding bands, and a black ring. Each item is annotated with details like 'Audrey's 12-years anniversary' and 'Audrey's wedding ring'.
    • A pendant necklace featuring a golden rose with a central pearl, attached to a silver circular connector linking to black leather cords, displayed against a white background.
  • Are you passionate about creating memorable events and fostering community connections? #YBCA is looking for dedicated professionals to join our team! We’re hiring an Event Manager and a Production Manager to support our Community and Special Events program. • Today, we honor the extraordinary work and life of Fumihiko Maki, the visionary Japanese architect who passed away at his Tokyo home on June 6, 2024. Renowned for fusing modernism with traditional architecture, Maki's adaptive, elegant, and understated approach to design has left an indelible mark on the world including the design of our building at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts. A 1993 Pritzker Prize and AIA Gold Medal laureate, Maki's influence spans the globe, with notable projects across Japan, the United States, Switzerland, China, and India. Among his acclaimed works are the 72-story 4 World Trade Center and the MIT Media Lab extension among many others. We invite you to learn more about his remarkable legacy in this reflection from board member and Design Principal at Dreyfuss + Blackford Architecture Amy Eliot. → https://bit.ly/3REnxr1 Photos courtesy of Maki and Associates and Jean Baptiste Paris
