We advocate for more affordable homes in San Diego through policy change. Fostering communities where all can thrive.

About us

We are neighbors advocating for more affordable housing opportunities across San Diego. Four core values drive our mission: Increasing San Diego's Housing Supply San Diego faces a housing crisis with high costs displacing residents. Building more homes at all income levels is key to improving affordability, preventing homelessness, and creating diverse, mixed-income communities. Legislative Reform We push to update laws and rules to allow more incentives for affordable housing development and remove barriers to new construction. Combating Climate Change As we add housing, we prioritize urban infill near public transit and job centers. This reduces emissions and sprawl, helping meet climate goals. Advancing Economic Inclusion Housing is a basic need. Our work promotes inclusion so all San Diegans can access safe, affordable homes and opportunities to thrive, uplifting our community. YIMBY Democrats unite neighbors to speak up for affordable homes, diversity, and sustainability. We rally behind "Yes In My Backyard" - a vision where everyone has a place to call home. Join us!

  • YIMBY Democrats of San Diego County were excited to participate in California YIMBY 2024 Lobby Day in Sacramento! 🏛️ Our board and students from UCSD advocated for solutions to California's housing shortage in meetings with many of San Diego's legislators: 🔸 Senate President Pro Tem Emeritus Toni Atkins 🔸 Senator Catherine Blakespear 🔸 Assemblymember Christopher Ward 🔸 Assemblymember Tasha Boerner Horvath 🔸 Assemblymember David Alvarez We urged support for bills to: ✅ Fund affordable rental housing & homeownership programs (AB 1657) ✅ Incentivize development of affordable condos (SB 1462/SB 1470) ✅ Streamline housing production in vacant single-family parcels (SB 1123) ✅ Ease barriers to building ADUs on multifamily properties (SB 1211) ✅ Provide fee relief during construction & increase fee transparency (SB 937 & AB 1820) By sharing our stories, we demonstrated how high costs, exclusionary zoning, and lack of housing options affect our communities. These reforms will spur the construction of affordable homes that benefit all Californians. 🙌 #YIMBYLobbyDay

My latest op-ed on how DSD in San Diego is completely turning around permit times, from slow to fast. My team is crushing it. -50% of no plan permits issued same day -60% of all permits issued within one week -Almost Doubled the number of housing units permitted from 2022 to 2023, from 5,000 to just under 10,000. https://lnkd.in/g8yhxtmQ

Opinion: San Diego Can Now Boast a 21st Century Building Permit Process with 50% Issued Same Day

  • 📢 San Diego, Say "Yes" to More Homes! San Diego is in a housing crisis. Rents are soaring, pushing out longtime residents and making it nearly impossible for many to find an affordable place to live. It doesn't have to be this way. As YIMBY (Yes In My Backyard) Democrats, we advocate for policy solutions to increase our housing supply. Every San Diegan deserves access to a safe, stable home they can afford. Our grassroots group is focused on building more housing for all San Diegans. That means: 🏘 Significantly more affordable housing reserved for lower-income families 🏢 More homes across all income levels to improve affordability 🚉 New housing built near public transit and job hubs 🌳 Sustainable, climate-friendly urban development We're taking this fight to city councils, planning commissions, the state legislature, and the streets through rallies and canvassing for candidates. But we need more neighbors like you to push for housing solutions that work for everyone. Join us at our regular meetings, events, and advocacy efforts so you can make a real-world impact. It's time to say "Yes" to more homes in San Diego! Follow this page to stay up to date and learn more.
