“Mental health is not a luxury. We can’t afford to look at it as a luxury. We have to look at how it’s baked into every single piece of what a person experiences, and how that affects how they’re able to learn, how they’re able to be at work, how they’re able to be in community. That’s why I really believe what we’re doing is necessary because we’re bringing that piece back [to the] front and center into what’s happening to [our] communities.” -Dr. Deidra Somerville Learn more about how our mental health branch programs, such as our Pacifica Youth Services Bureau and its partnership with Pacificans Care, are centering mental health and bringing more awareness to our Peninsula communities. May is Older Americans Month. Established in 1963, Older Americans Month is dedicated to acknowledging the contribution and achievements of older Americans, while sharing the importance of finding fulfillment in the aging process. Recently, our Active Older Adults (AOA) participated in the 53rd annual Pow Wow at Stanford University. This year's theme was “Empowering Indigenous Woman”. Our AOA members got to see and enjoy dances, drumming, and singing as well as arts and crafts. #YMCASF #YSF #ActiveOlderAdults #OlderAmericansMonth

This is National Water Safety Month, and while we know all ages love our facility pools and aquatics programs, we are especially proud of our programs that illuminate our vision of equity and access to safety in swimming for our youth. Bayview Safety Swim and Splash not only does this but has brought us together with incredible partners, and support from companies like Amazon. Thank you, Amazon for seeing how community-driven programs not only change lives, and our neighborhoods, but our future as well. #ymcasf #ysf https://ow.ly/11cW50RCglg

May is Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, and we're celebrating the history of Asian Pacific Islanders within the YMCA movement. Did you know that the first Chinese American YMCA was founded in San Francisco in 1911? The Y held lectures on health, education, classes in English and Mandarin and even had a machine shop! To this day, the Chinatown YMCA plays a pivotal role in the community. YMCA of San Francisco reposted this
Y for youth is a wonderful event and testimonial moment for the YMCA of San Francisco and its work. This year the event is changed and will highlight the southern neighborhoods in the exciting development at Crane Cove. As the chair of the Bayview Hunters Point Branch Board of Advisors, I am proud to share the Bayview team will be leading the youth programming provided at the annex. The Y for Youth event being located there is an unofficial kick off to that reality. Please come, enjoy the event and support the Y. 🎉
