We need your help to make a meaningful impact on the lives of kids in a San Francisco emergency shelter. Imagine being a child facing the uncertainty of life in an emergency shelter. Amidst the challenges, these kids often lack access to educational resources that can spark their curiosity and ignite their potential. At Young STEAMers, we are committed to changing that. Our mission is to provide engaging and interactive STEAM classes that inspire young minds and open doors to future opportunities. We are launching a fundraising campaign to raise $1500. This amount will allow us to bring our STEAM enrichment classes to the kids in one of San Francisco's emergency shelters. With your support, our passionate instructors will meet these kids twice every month throughout the entire school year, bring all the materials needed and provide them with consistent, high-quality educational experiences. We invite you to join us in making a difference. Every donation, no matter the size, brings us closer to our goal. THANK YOU!!!

Today, July 25th, we celebrate Dr. Rosalind Franklin birthday. Dr. Franklin was a British chemist and X-ray crystallographer whose work was central to the understanding of the molecular structures of DNA (as well as RNA, viruses, coal, and graphite). Franklin's contributions to the discovery of the structure of DNA were largely unrecognized during her life, for which Franklin has been variously referred to as the "wronged heroine", the "dark lady of DNA” and more (see references below). Rosalind Franklin's story is often cited as a prime example of the injustices faced by women in science. As an X-ray crystallographer, Franklin played a crucial role in uncovering the structure of DNA. Her work provided key data that were instrumental in James Watson and Francis Crick's elucidation of the double helix structure of DNA, a discovery that won them the Nobel Prize in 1962. However, Franklin's contributions were not fully recognized during her lifetime. She faced discrimination and marginalization in the male-dominated scientific community of the time. One of the most infamous incidents was the unauthorized use of her data by Watson and Crick, who obtained a critical photograph, known as "Photograph 51," without her knowledge or consent. This photograph provided crucial insights into the structure of DNA. Her story highlights broader issues of sexism and gender inequality in science, which persist to this day. Women scientists faced obstacles such as implicit bias, unequal opportunities for funding and advancement, and a lack of recognition for their contributions throughout history and unfortunately till this day. Efforts to address these injustices are being made, and include promoting diversity and inclusion in STEM fields, advocating for equal opportunities and recognition for women scientists, and raising awareness of the contributions of overlooked figures like Rosalind Franklin. By acknowledging and rectifying past injustices and working towards a more equitable future, we can create a scientific community where talent and contributions are valued regardless of gender. Dr. Rosalind Franklin (1920-1958)

The Future-Ready Impact of STEAM By Ursaline Mcleod As the world rapidly changes, opportunities to solve new challenges and enhance current solutions are overflowing. The skills of yesterday will not meet the needs of tomorrow.  Traditional roles are evolving to seamlessly incorporate a variety of STEAM skills. This approach to learning can equip children with the key skills and mindset to succeed. Below, are a few traditional roles that are changing before our very eyes: -Bakers/Chefs- Use Science and Art to craft spectacular hanging cakes and realistic edible sculptures. -Beauticians- Combine Art, Chemistry and Technology to meet the beauty needs of clients.  -Mechanics- Need to meet the needs of evolving smart vehicles.  -Plumbers - Integrating sustainability, in-home water recycling and digital management. There’s increasing demand for STEAM skills and mindset as customer demands and expectations rise. Consumers have more power and want better results in a socially acceptable manner. Our future requires creative thinkers prepped to overcome these challenges. The way the world is changing is exciting, STEAM learning gives children the best opportunities to exceed. Through interactive projects and creative, hands-on activities we nurture their inherent desire to learn and grow. Young STEAMers Paving the Way for Equity in STEAM Every child deserves to fuel their curiosity, exploring topics about space, oceans, the body and so much more. Equitable access to STEAM education for students can have far reaching impact on communities and workplaces of the future. To develop actual solutions to our varying problems there needs to be varying perspectives at the round table.  We believe that in providing high quality STEAM learning opportunities for the communities we serve, we provide easier access to diverse communities to pursue higher education and careers in STEAM-related fields. Every child deserves to acquire the skills to make a difference, regardless of where they started.
