#BlueMonday has been dubbed by some as “the most depressing day of the year.” It can be especially hard on those struggling with depression. Whether caused by the crappy weather or “failed” New Year’s resolutions, this time of year has many feeling hopeless— and these sneaky everyday habits are often making it worse without us realizing it. One of the big ones? Scrolling social media and comparing ourselves to others who seem much happier. That’s why we’re asking you and everyone you know to participate in our #KeepItReal campaign and sign our pledge to commit to being more vulnerable and honest on social media throughout all of 2024. When we all decide to put down our armor and embrace our imperfections, flaws, and genuine realities we will move from a dangerous and depressing culture of comparison to a humanizing and uplifting culture of connection. In one way or another, we’ve all felt the negative impacts of social media on our mental health. But what we don’t talk about enough is that Comparison Culture is one of the major culprits. Comparison Culture, a growing phenomenon where we constantly measure ourselves against others, is nothing new … but social media apps are certainly making it worse. When we conducted a survey about Comparison Culture at YourTango, our respondents agreed. Some even said Comparison Culture made them more likely to make risky financial decisions, feel more depressed, and even contemplate self-harm. Clearly, we need to do something about this. That’s why at YourTango, we are committed to being part of the solution—and we want you to be, as well. Sign our pledge to #KeepItReal in 2024 and join us in making a genuine effort to be more honest and transparent about what we’re posting on social media. Tell us the real story behind that super cool picture. Try posting without filters. Share the silly, imperfect outtakes. When we do this together, we’ll move away from a culture of comparison to a culture of connection. We’ll instill courage in others to do the same and collectively make social media a more joyful and positive experience for all. Will you sign our pledge?
