About us
Established in 1998, Youth Outlook is Illinois’ first and longest-running nonprofit social services agency solely dedicated to supporting LGBTQ+ youth. We offer services that impact the whole of the LGBTQ+ youth experience – self, home, school, and community. We work across Illinois, offering virtual and in-person drop-in centers for youth ages 12-20, age-appropriate programming for LGBTQ+ children in grades K-6, caregiver and parent support, community education, and professional development. The need for these services has never been more urgent. National research indicates that LGBTQ+ youth are coming out at an average age of 13, down from 19 about a decade ago, opening them up to victimization and rejection they are not equipped to handle and putting them at risk for poor mental health outcomes. We invite you to join us in helping LGBTQ+ youth feel safe, supported, and celebrated!

It's time for another installment of our TGD Wellness series in partnership with Illinois Department of Human Services and Public Health Institute of Metropolitan Chicago! This week, we're providing 4 questions you can ask when searching for an affirming and experienced mental health professional: 1. Education! Has the mental health provider educated themselves on the LGBTQ+ population and specific needs of the community? 2. WPATH! Does the mental health provider have knowledge of WPATH (World Professional Association for Transgender Health) and the set of standards for working with the trans and gender diverse communities? 3. Experience! Does the mental health provider have experience working with LGBTQ+ clients and/or are open and willing to learn about your personal experience as a member of the LGBTQ+ community? 4. Letters! Ask if the mental health professional provides letters of confirmation/readiness or if they would be willing to. Checking WPATH standards can be a big help for first-time letter writers. You can find them on wpath.org !

Welcome back to another installment of our #TGDWellness series in partnership with Illinois Department of Human Services and Public Health Institute of Metropolitan Chicago! This week, we're taking a look at a few simple steps to make the process of finding quality gender-affirming surgery a little bit easier: 1️⃣ Ask Around: Chat with friends, join support or online groups, and connect with the community—word of mouth is powerful so check with friends and community members about their experiences. 2️⃣ Check Insurance: Confirm what’s covered & set up that consultation! Note that Medicaid and Medicare in IL cover gender affirming surgeries, but be prepared that consultation times may take several months. 3️⃣ Verify the Vibes: You deserve a surgeon who gets you! Trust your gut. Did you feel heard? Were all your questions answered? Check-in with yourself about if they are the right fit for you. Follow these steps and you are on your way to finding the best gender affirming care provider for you!🏳️⚧️✨ #GenderAffirmingCare #TheFutureIsInclusive
