Historically oppressed and marginalized individuals and communities are healed and transformed.

About us

Youth Empowerment is a frontline grassroots community organization that has risen from humble beginnings. The City Heights neighborhood, San Diego’s most diverse community with the highest rates of poverty and interpersonal violence, raised Youth Empowerment’s founders, husband and wife Arthur and Gaby Soriano, and their life-long friend Robert Ontiveros. In 2015, following 24 years of incarceration, Arthur returned with a newfound vision and conviction to heal and transform. With this in mind, Arthur started connecting with other former gang members he knew who were also looking to change their ways. The couple and Mr. Ontiveros began holding weekly barbecues at Teralta Park and established a sense of family and credibility that helped the youth see a life beyond the confines of their neighborhood. These grassroots beginnings would build the model that would eventually become Youth Empowerment. Since then, Youth Empowerment has been a thriving grassroots organization with programs that serve San Diego’s justice-involved and high-needs families and communities. Six years later, Youth Empowerment is a leader of the Community Mentors, also known as Credible Messengers, movement and has received local and national recognition for its efforts. This movement has proven that those who have exited the justice system and transformed their lives are the most credible messengers when working with justice-impacted youth, adults, and families. In 2019, after twenty-five years of incarceration and determined to heal the community she once harmed, Niki Martinez joined the team and has accelerated Youth Empowerment’s programming growth and partnerships. She, along with all lived experience mentors, are committed to standing with those who are returning to the community as they embrace their path of healing and transformation.

We’re all about keeping our youth engaged and providing them with fresh, meaningful experiences. Teaching them to cook is not only enjoyable but also incredibly valuable. It’s more than just learning a recipe; it’s about instilling independence, confidence, and practical skills that they can carry into adulthood. By introducing them to the kitchen, we’re giving them tools that will help them navigate life with a sense of self-sufficiency and creativity. This hands-on learning goes a long way in building their confidence and setting them up for success, both in and out of the kitchen. 👋 Follow Youth Empowerment for more content. ♻️ Repost to share with your network. #YouthEmpowerment

Supporting youth of all ages is a vital mission that requires our unwavering commitment and collective effort. At Youth Empowerment, we firmly believe that every young person, regardless of their background or circumstances, deserves access to the resources, guidance, and opportunities necessary to thrive. We remain actively engaged throughout their entire journey, ensuring they have the support they need to navigate each phase successfully. Whether it’s academic assistance, social-emotional development, or providing outlets like basketball and other sports, we offer diverse ways for youth to channel their energy and express themselves. Through physical activities, they not only maintain their health but also gain invaluable lessons in teamwork, discipline, and perseverance. Youth development is crucial for communities as it fosters positive growth, leadership, and skill-building among young people. This leads to a more engaged, innovative, and sustainable community. Maintaining excitement and engagement in our programs can be challenging, but it’s a challenge we eagerly embrace. We continuously strive to introduce new and inventive activities that captivate our youth and keep them motivated. One of our recent initiatives involved building a lava lamp from scratch. This project was more than just a creative endeavor; it offered our youth an opportunity to explore scientific principles and unleash their creativity in a hands-on manner. By integrating fun and educational activities like this, we ensure that our programs remain dynamic and impactful, providing our youth with enriching experiences that foster both learning and enthusiasm. 👋 Follow Youth Empowerment for more content. ♻️ Repost to share with your network. #YouthEmpowerment #EmpoweringYouth

The YMCA Teen Center is more than just a venue for our programs; it is a cornerstone of safety, stability, and support for our youth. Here, they find a consistent and welcoming space where they can truly be themselves, away from the pressures and challenges of the outside world. The center fosters an environment where young people can explore their passions, develop new skills, and build lasting friendships. It’s a place where they are encouraged to dream big, take risks, and grow into confident, capable individuals. The sense of community and belonging that the Teen Center provides is invaluable, helping our youth to feel understood, valued, and empowered as they navigate their journey to adulthood. We are incredibly grateful for the role the YMCA Teen Center plays in their lives, offering them the space to learn, connect, and thrive. 👋 Follow Youth Empowerment for more content. ♻️ Repost to share with your network. #YMCA #YouthEmpowerment

We've come up with an exciting game designed to challenge our youth, encouraging them to use their mental quickness and sharp reflexes. The goal of the game is simple but thrilling: be the first to grab the cup faster than your opponents. This activity not only promotes friendly competition but also helps develop focus, coordination, and strategic thinking. Our youth have been having a blast with it, and it's fantastic to see them engage so enthusiastically. 👋 Follow Youth Empowerment for more content. ♻️ Repost to share with your network. #YouthEmpowerment #MentalStrength
