The Irving Convention Center in Texas features a Zahner-engineered and produced copper curtainwall. The entire surface of the project is custom-perforated and bumped with a pattern unique to the building. The surface was installed as mill-finish copper, which means that the raw ‘red’ copper surface will go through a long process of patination. Within weeks of installation, the project had already begun to darken in areas, and within a year, the whole building had a deep bluish-brown patina. This natural process is a result of the temperature, moisture, and pollution in the air, which causes the material to at first darken and eventually change to greens and blues many years from now. The Sun Pavilion in El Paso, Texas, was commissioned by the Museum of Cultural Affairs. Zahner provided engineering and custom art fabrication, using cut aluminum plates in shapes inspired by paper-cutting craft traditions of the area. The face of each metal plate is painted silver, while red paint covers the verso. When lit up in the evening, the structure resembles a paper lantern. This Hamptons Beach House Residence on Long Island, New York, features a protective aluminum plate screen facade fabricated by Zahner. Because of extreme coastal weather conditions, the design had to reconcile the desire to openly experience the landscape with a real need for protection. The solution was to create a tough exterior shell with an open, light-filled interior. Intricate shadow patterns, created by water-jet cut metal screens, move through the house as the day unfolds. Designed by VOA Associates, White Chapel is a non-denominational place of prayer serving the campus community at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology.
