A message from Callie Parr, Zero to Five Montana Early Childhood Tribal Policy Coordinator: Today represents a vital opportunity to honor the rich histories, vibrant cultures, and enduring contributions of Indigenous peoples across the United States and right here in Montana. Indigenous Peoples Day serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of our cultural heritage and the wisdom that Indigenous communities bring to our society. For many of us, Indigenous Peoples Day is a time to acknowledge the resilience and strength of our communities, including those who have faced centuries of colonization and systemic injustices. It is a reminder of our ancestors’ sacrifices and the ongoing struggles for rights, recognition, and respect that continue today. Today offers an invitation to confront the narratives that have often marginalized Indigenous experiences and to embrace a more truthful understanding of our shared history. As we celebrate today, let us commit to meaningful action. Some ways we can all participate include: 1. Educating ourselves and others: Take the time to learn about the histories and cultures of local tribes. Share this knowledge within your circles to foster greater understanding. 2. Support Indigenous-led initiatives: Seek out and support Native businesses, artists, and organizations that contribute to our communities. 3. Engage in dialogue: Don’t shy away from conversations about Indigenous rights and the importance of cultural respect in your networks. Let us approach Indigenous Peoples Day with humility, respect, and a genuine desire to understand and honor the experiences of Native peoples. Together, we can foster a future with a commitment to reconciliation, understanding, and support for the youngest members of our communities—those who will carry our stories and traditions forward. Wishing you all a meaningful and reflective Indigenous Peoples Day. #IndigenousPeoplesDay #CulturalHumility #NativeResiliancy #NativeAllies #CulturalAccomplices #LanguagePreservation #earlylearning #earlyeducation #earlychildhood #childcare #earlycare #supportedfamilies #zerotofive #forourchildren #forourfuture #montana

The upcoming legislative session is an opportunity for our lawmakers to ensure Montana is the best place to live and raise a family. Elevating early childhood as a top priority is critical for building a stronger Montana. By ensuring children in rural, urban and tribal communities across the state have access to safe and healthy early learning experiences and stable, nurturing environments, policymakers can help set the foundation for Montana’s kids to succeed. Strong systems are the basis for long-term sustainable change – every child in Montana deserves the chance to flourish, but not all children have access to the same early childhood supports. Our 2025 policy agenda is a collaborative effort. During the summer of 2024, the Zero to Five Montana team traveled across the state to engage with communities and gather input on early childhood issues. Partners in nine communities, including Billings, Cut Bank, Great Falls, Helena, Livingston, Lodge Grass, Miles City, Polson, and Red Lodge, shared their experiences around issues affecting young children and families in their areas. This on-the-ground input – from families and early childhood professionals as well as community and state leaders – helped inform our 2025 policy agenda. Together, we can help shape the decisions necessary to transform our state’s early childhood system. Please join the Zero to Five Montana crew in wishing Heide Borgonovo, a very fond farewell. Heide joined our team as Communications & Outreach Coordinator for our Montana Child Care Business Connect program in 2022. She was an absolute force in graphic design, social media, marketing, website work, technical assistance and more -- wearing all the hats a communications pro wears with style. We knew we’d lose her when our ARPA funding came to a close this fall, but it doesn’t make saying goodbye any easier. Best of luck to you, Heide, in your new adventure! We already miss you...
