Multilateral development banks (MDBs) hold over USD 1.8 trillion in assets globally and play a critical role in #ClimateFinance by providing and mobilising funds for climate mitigation and adaptation. According to a #G20 report, MDBs could unlock hundreds of billions of dollars more in financing if they implemented reforms such as taking on more risk, innovating and boosting transparency. The Asia Zero Emission Community (AZEC) has set ambitious goals for decarbonising Asia, but new analysis by Zero Carbon Analytics has revealed that over 35% of its agreements focus on fossil fuel technologies like LNG, ammonia co-firing, and CCS. These technologies, while promoted as “transition” solutions, pose significant risks to Southeast Asia’s decarbonisation efforts. Experts warn that relying on fossil fuels could hinder the region’s ability to meet its net-zero targets and increase long-term costs.
