If an imitation gun appears on a school campus—is this a valid concern? Unfortunately, yes. Imitation and non-lethal gun-related incidents can still cause physical, mental, and financial repercussions across a school #community. In K-12 institutions, our Gun Violence Research Center (GVRC) saw a sharp increase in imitation guns and false active shooter reports. Over the 2022/2023 to 2023/2024 school years, the GVRC reported that the use of imitation and non-lethal guns increased by 89.9%. The rise in events like swatting, hoaxes, and live “games” like Senior Assassins has contributed to this increase. ❓Why is this an issue? 👉These events can cause mistaken identity, panic/mass hysteria, and possible officer involvement.
