DOE & Industry to develop the #Standard H2 Station for all of #US. Kudos to the twenty U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) recipients of $65M. Humbled to see that ZEV Station together with National Renewable Energy Laboratory as one of the recipients! Summary: - Components for #Hydrogen Fueling of Medium- and Heavy-Duty (MD/HD) Vehicles (4 projects, $8.5M). Selected projects will develop advanced components to enable GH2 & LH2 fueling for medium- and HD H2 powered vehicles. - Standardized #H2 Refueling Station of the Future (4 projects, $40M). Projects will develop and demonstrate a low-cost, standardized, and replicable advanced fast fueling in both #GH2/ #LH2 —to meet the needs of commercial-scale MD/HD truck fueling. - Hydrogen #FuelCell-Powered #Port Equipment (1 project, $2.5 M). Projects will design, develop, and demonstrate a hydrogen fuel cell “top loader” (for handling containers) and a mobile refueler at the Port of Oakland - Enabling #Permitting and Safety for Hydrogen Deployment (7 projects, $7M). Projects will identify the primary challenges to siting, permitting, and installation across the value chain from hydrogen production through end-use, and explore opportunities to address them. - Equitable H2 #Technology Community Engagement (4 projects, $4M). Projects will improve the capacity of DOE and DOE-funded projects to conduct effective community-engagement activities. It is important to convey to those joining into the hydrogen economy now whether its investment or production, we need further development to plan for mass production. We have work to do to achieve commercial goals: hydrogen & fuel cell vehicle parity in performance, durability and cost. Great to see the both the industry, State of California, ARCHES H2 and US #DOE (and many others), actively engaged towards the goal of development to production. Kudos to BMW Group for announcing fuel cell production plans with EU funding. Proud see commercial hydrogen in action, after establishing SAE J2601 fueling standard, as well as helping launch their fuel cell 5 series SUV as the first project manager of the 70 MPa hydrogen storage system. A little known fact, the first SAE Fueling standards, SAE J2601 & J2799 were originally developed by the SAE team with data from a BMW budget for hydrogen fueling/ tank testing at Powertech. This validated and enabled consistent and safe, 5 minute fueling shown below for Light duty vehicles. https://lnkd.in/g6Hn3gjR Both shown below.

#ZEV Freight Infrastructure roadmap for all of US: The Joint Office of Energy & Transportation published its #EV & #H2, National Zero-Emission Freight Corridor Strategy to support the decarbonisation of medium- and #heavyduty trucks — with an eye toward nationwide access to both #hydrogen refuelling stations and #electric chargepoints by 2040. To achieve U.S. goals of promoting at least 30% ZE-MHDV sales by 2030 and 100% sales by 2040, the freight industry will need expansive and convenient access to electric vehicle charging and hydrogen refueling along freight corridors, at intermodal freight facilities, and high-usage ports. The strategy aims to align public policy and investments by prioritizing infrastructure deployment along the National Highway Freight Network and complementary roadways in rapid, smart, and actionable phases to accelerate the adoption of ZE-MHDVs. Initial deployment focuses on locations with the highest need and demonstrated action to leverage federal funds and drive private investment. Summary of roadmap: - First phase starting now to 2027, to focus on deploying “first-mover” EV Truck fleets at key freight hubs and building out infrastructure along 12,000 miles (19,312km) of road — 23% of the national highway freight network. - Second phase starting in 2027-2030, zero-emission freight corridors start to go past phase one to cover 36% of the national highway freight network leveraged by the $8B of #Hydrogen Hubs starting capacity. - Third phase, between 2030 and 2035, the strategy expects “both EV and H2, #fuelcell truck technology to be prevalent, with "increased to hydrogen refueling along freight corridors”. This phase would also see a major roll-out of refuelling and charging infrastructure along 72% of the national highway freight network. By 2035, Regional Clean #HydrogenHubs at full production capacity. - Forth phase, 2035-2040, the US government plans for zero-emission freight corridors to cover 94% of the national highway freight network in the final phase with larger #H2 Stations. Kudos to the US #DOE/ #DOT Joint Office of Energy and Transportation on this prioritization roadmap for public and private funding. The freight corridores in the US, coast to coast (from warehouse to port and back) are a much needed holistic strategy along the alternative fuel corridores for Zero Emission Vehicles & Trucks to help greatly reduce GHG & Criteria pollutants. Kudos to the SAE Wireless Power Transfer Taskforce team for deciding upon “Differential Inductive Positioning System” as alignment methodology in the upcoming light duty J2954 standard; finalizing set of requirements needed to start commercialization. The taskforce, consisting of automakers (OEMs), Tier 1s & wireless charging suppliers, were surveyed to determine minimum common methods for alignment (fine alignment, pairing, and alignment check) to be standardized and agreed upon DIPS as the alignment technology for the upcoming revision for SAE J2954, Wireless Power Transfer (WPT) for Light-Duty Plug-in/Electric Vehicles and Alignment Methodology. Wireless Power Transfer (WPT) following SAE J2954 enables fully automatic wireless charging solution for electric vehicles and promises highly efficient charging (up to 93%) of electric and plug-in-hybrid vehicles. The missing piece of standardization of light duty WPT has been finding an alignment methodology which works in all weather conditions and environments and is interoperable between many different types of applications. The next revision of SAE J2954 with DIPS enables automated parking and charging also for autonomous vehicles. The new J2954 standard alignment system, DIPS, is described as a low-frequency, low-intensity magnetic field generated from the ground assembly with multiple coils that can evaluated by the vehicle assembly for positioning. A conformance test is done to ensure interoperability between vehicle and charging pad. Ground and Vehicle WPT assembly manufacturers can develop and test their systems according to this interoperability specification. The DIPS transmitter and receiver coils can be fully integrated into the GA and VA. The updated SAE J2954 light duty vehicle standard is expected to be published in the first quarter 2024 with a detailed specification and data report presented at SAE World Congress in April 2024. “EV charging should be as simple as parking in the right spot and walking away, SAE J2954 Standard enables this,” stated Jesse Schneider, chair of the SAE Wireless Power Transfer Task Force (ZEV Station). “The SAE J2954 Taskforce decided on the standardized alignment method DIPS, completing the standard, making a seamless and automated, all-weather wireless charging & parking. With this, the team has solved the missing link for wireless charging commercialization for EVs.” “Wireless charging effectively provides an electric vehicle with infinite range. Just park and forget. The vehicle is always charged. With this update to the standard, wireless automatic charging will become available to public infrastructure. I’m pleased to commend the excellent work of the SAE J2954 technical sub-committee for alignment and controls on the extended efforts to reach this result.” Stated Ky Sealy, co-chair of the SAE J2954 Alignment and Controls sub-team (WiTricity).
