Summer thoughts: could battery swappability be the future of EVs? I have been quiet for a while, and will still ask you for a bit of patience before sharing exciting news to come later 😋. I read a lot of comments around the current EV momentum and so wanted to reflect on a milestone NIO has hit in last month with the launch of our 50th Power Swap Station (PSS) in Europe*, and another one we will hit this month with a total 50 million battery swaps* achieved globally since launch (actually 49.6* as we speak - was 26 million a year ago). NIO pioneers a unique infrastructure and services ecosystem*, and is mostly known for its proprietary #batteryswap technology. There are many benefits from swapping but let's not oppose it to charging and focus here on the bigger picture which is about sharing a "pool" of batteries accross cars and customers. Swapping allows batteries, which are both biggest asset & concern for EVs, to be physically separated from the car in an less-than-5 minutes automated process. Batteries actually start their life in a car and will circulate amongst others cars during their lifespan. Automotive industry now differentiates hardware from software - what we call Software Defined Vehicles #SDV. NIO pushed system efficiency further by differentiating hardware, software and battery. NIOs are chargeable like any other EVs, but they are also swappable and upgradable. It means our entire line-up of wagon/sedans/SUV/SUV-Coupé across different segments share one and single standardised battery pack, available in different kWh capacities. Same dimensions and similar weight to allow swap without impacting vehicle dynamics, but leveraging different chemistry solutions inside the pack to offer a wide set of driving ranges. Looking at use-case, it means: 1. You can purchase a car with a Standard Range battery and consider upgrading on a Long Range battery on demand for ad-hoc longer trips or specific needs. Or later in the vehicle lifecycle - pending user needs. 2. You can access the latest battery technology available as the vehicle ages, hence enjoying increased range or faster charging performance thanks to upgraded battery chemistry. Our first cars from 2018 can use 2024 battery technology. 2. We have already setup a functional supply chain for battery recycling through the Power Swap Stations: recyling process itself is easier with standardized packs, but the real enabler is our automated capacity to recover and store batteries away from the car. This is what "swappable" and "upgradable" means: good news for battery and vehicle sustainability in general, and a game changer for the electric car in particular with EVs getting better as they age and staying stay longer on the road, thanks to their battery swappability by design. #residualvalues So, what if the future of EVs relied in battery swappability? Happy birthday Thomas 🥳! I turned 40 a few weeks ago, an obviously important milestone and guess what - I celebrated my birthday in the world’s largest EV market, China! Today I am very happy to be back in the country for the 2023 Shanghai Auto Show opening and press days. I will take this opportunity to announce that after an amazing journey with VINFAST since May 2021, launching VinFast Europe operations from scratch across France, Germany and the Netherlands, I am proud to embrace a new highly exciting challenge to keep pushing boundaries and help making EVs more accessible for everyone - a journey I kicked-off almost 10 years ago with Nissan Motor Corporation. What a delivery! I grew up with Paris Motorshow when I was a child, and was thrilled to see the crowd gathering for our VinFast Europe Press Conference at Mondial de l’Auto - Paris yesterday. We shared major breaking news, proving VinFast’s commitment to driving forward the electrification of mobility. Besides our all-electric line-up covering B, C, D and E-segments showcased on the booth, we are now extending to major investments in Europe with our first European stores opening from November. Time to accelerate! Last week was VINFAST European Premiere in Oslo, Norway at #EVS35olso show, the world's largest EV event this year. We showcased our all-electric SUV line-up with the VF 8 and VF 9 and - surprise - a glimpse of the VF 7, our upcoming EV C-SUV that is joining the line-up very soon. We also confirmed our ambitions for Europe with more than 50 VinFast Stores to open accross our first launch markets: France, Germany and the Netherlands. Beyond numbers we announced the first locations to open as we will be delivering our first cars by the end of this year: Paris, Marseille, Nantes, Rennes, Nice, Montpellier, Aix en Provence and Metz for France and Munich, Frankfurt, Berlin, Cologne, Oberhausen and Hamburg for Germany. Amsterdam is expected to be first VinFast Store to open in the Netherlands. Lastly, we kicked-off a premium launch programme for early adopters which includes a complimentary home delivery by an EV expert and 1 year free VinFast Smart Driving package for customers to enjoy the best of our ADAS & Smart Services technologies. What a journey! It has been already a year with VINFAST preparing to launch the amazing Vietnamese premium brand to France, Germany and the Netherlands with a full range of all-electric SUVs. In a less than year we stunned the world with our Pininfarina -designed VF 8 and VF 9 customers are booking online since January, unveiled what's coming next, started production of battery electric cars in our state-of-the-art factory in Vietnam and built very first vehicles made available for ride-and-drive at New York Auto Show. Things will accelerate in Europe from this summer - stay tuned for very exciting news! Just back from a 7-days business trip to Vietnam. Blasting news this week! Back a few months ago in Los Angeles Auto Show, VINFAST announced looking for a manufacturing facility in the USA. And Tuesday, an MoU was signed with North Carolina State Governor confirming VinFast’s intention to build a new 800 ha state-of-the-art manufacturing facility, a 2 billion USD investment to produce up to 150,000 eletric vehicles per year in first phase. Start of production is expected July 2024. This new achievement illustrate our amazing pace since 2017 and the brand's commitment in investing and developing business in international markets.
