The theme of 2024 World Environment Day (June 5), "Our Land, Our Future," starkly underscores the escalating land degradation crisis, desertification, and drought in India. As cities expand, their environmental footprint deepens. Rapid urbanisation and a changing climate demand a new paradigm: urban development built upon resilience and sustainability. #Sustainability #SmartCities #urbanisation #World #Environment #Climatechange #GreenSkills #GreenCities #ResilientFuture Read more at: https://lnkd.in/gJGT4jdU

Why should we think about resilience? We should think about resilience in climate change because it helps communities, ecosystems, and infrastructure adapt and recover from the impacts of climate change, reducing vulnerability and increasing capacity to withstand and bounce back from extreme events like floods, storms, and heatwaves. Building resilience can enhance long-term sustainability and protect lives, livelihoods, and assets in the face of environmental challenges. I will give you example ,Certainly! Natural and organic farming practices can contribute to climatic resilience in several ways: 1. Improved Soil Health: Practices such as crop rotation, cover cropping, and composting in organic farming enhance soil health. Healthy soils can better retain water, resist erosion, and sequester carbon, which helps mitigate climate change impacts like droughts and floods. 2.Reduced Carbon Emissions: Organic farming typically relies less on synthetic fertilizers and pesticides, which are energy-intensive to produce and contribute to greenhouse gas emissions. By reducing reliance on these inputs, organic farming can help mitigate climate change. 3.Biodiversity Conservation: Organic farming often promotes biodiversity by avoiding synthetic chemicals that can harm beneficial organisms. Biodiverse farming systems are more resilient to climate variability because they can better adapt to changing conditions and are less susceptible to pest and disease outbreaks. 4.Water Conservation: Organic farming practices such as mulching and using organic matter to improve soil structure can enhance water retention in the soil. This helps mitigate the impacts of drought by reducing water runoff and increasing the availability of water to crops during dry periods. 5.Resilient Crop Varieties Organic farming often prioritizes traditional and locally adapted crop varieties that are better suited to local environmental conditions. These varieties are often more resilient to pests, diseases, and extreme weather events, making organic farming systems more resilient overall. An example of a natural and organic farming system that contributes to climatic resilience is agroforestry, which involves integrating trees and shrubs into agricultural landscapes. Agroforestry systems provide multiple benefits, including improved soil fertility, enhanced water retention, biodiversity conservation, and carbon sequestration. By diversifying agricultural landscapes and mimicking natural ecosystems, agroforestry can help farmers adapt to and mitigate the impacts of climate change. Thank you 😊🙏 #climatechange #soilhealth #organicfarming #naturalfarming #resilience #forestry #agriculture #climateaction

I am really looking forward to the Climate Action Workshop, we at Aga Khan Agency for Habitat India are putting together next week. Our illustrious panels of brilliant, passionate folk committed to the cause of climate change will discuss two topics close to our heart. The first is #coastalresilience where we work closely with communities to develop #sustainable #naturebasedsolutions that help them weather the risks that climate change brings to the coasts. (My post on Reshmaben from a few days ago makes it clear about why it’s so close to my heart). We are proposing that coastal cities are networked to increase their resilience and will be launching with Jagan Shah the first convening. Do indicate your interest in the comments. The second topic we will cover is #urban #climatechange . This is important because it’s an urgent need - we really need to find ways to make our cities more sustainable and livable and we are eager to delve deeper into the complex world of urban sustainability. As companies increase their focus on #csr and #esg , conversations such as the two I outlined will become front and centre for many businesses. This is indeed the right time to start and grow these discussions. With our panelists Barjor Mehta Rathish Balakrishnan Autif Sayyed Parul Agarwala Yeshika Malik Shruti Narayan who have decades of experience and a 360 degree view of the problem, as well as our esteemed keynote speakers Amitabh Kant and Onno Ruhl, this promises to be an interesting and engaging conversation.

Indian cities are strategically navigating through urban development while facing a challenging climate scenario, escalated by #greenhouse gas (#GHG) emissions, more frequent #climate disasters, and the impact of urban growth. Monitoring #climateactions is therefore necessary for building #resilience and #sustainable cities. In this context, National Institute of Urban Affairs (NIUA) and Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs have created #CSCAF, a self-assessment tool for cities to monitor their climate action. 👇Explore more about CSCAF in our Did You Know Series (#DYKSeries) Follow #DYKSeriesNIUA #NIUAProjectInsights for more updates. As #climatechange accelerates, cities urgently require localized solutions that strengthen #resilience, particularly for lower-income communities. We recently convened key local ecosystem players in Santiago, Lagos, and Mumbai to identify high-potential #climateadaptation innovation areas and ecosystem-level actions that can help strengthen urban climate adaptation innovation ecosystems. Keeya-Lee Ayre and Tyler Ferdinand spotlight three impactful actions to nurture resilient and regenerative cities, including: - Hosting hackathons and other educational events for youth - Formalizing a network of trusted and reliable actors - Co-creating knowledge products that showcase adaptation innovation Read more: https://lnkd.in/dmcjK89r
