I’m in shock. I still remember like it was yesterday. I was at a cross-department meeting and I said “no” (politely) to an idea for a learning and development program. I almost always said “yes” in the past. In fact one of my weaknesses was saying “yes” to everything. I finally found my backbone and stood up for a belief I had. I went to lunch that day with some friends and colleagues. When I got back from lunch I noticed something centered in front of my keyboard and computer monitor. It was a cupcake with a card. It wasn’t my birthday. It wasn’t a holiday. It wasn’t a company event. My boss (and dear friend) Mark Irvine had bought it for me. He got our small team to sign the card and congratulate me for saying “no” for the first time. It was one of the most valuable lessons I’ve ever learned. It’s still tough to say “no,” but I feel so much more comfortable saying it than before. However, it’s much tougher to say goodbye to you, Mark. I love you friend.
