Lockheed Martin Skunk Works® partnered with the University of Iowa’s Operator Performance Laboratory (OPL) to demonstrate the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in air-to-air intercept scenarios. The successful flights are a significant milestone for Skunk Works’ Tactical AI team, in which AI directly flew and conducted tactical exercises with a full-scale, live aircraft – one of OPL’s L-29 Delfin jets – using heading, speed and altitude commands. The team executed simulated-to-real transfer test objectives against a virtual adversary in offensive and defensive risk postures. Eight test cases were conducted per flight to exercise the AI agent in a variety of situations, from standard head-to-head fights to off-aspect encounters, missile support and missile defeat scenarios. The team was encouraged to see clean sim-to-real transfer of learned behaviors and that the AI agent appeared intentional and decisive in its actions. #military#defense#defence#militaryleak#LockheedMartin#SkunkWorkshttps://lnkd.in/gmX3k5rh

🚀 Groundbreaking Milestone in Aerospace: DARPA's ACE Program Leads AI Integration in Air Combat 🚀
In a pioneering achievement, DARPA's Air Combat Evolution (ACE) program has conducted the world's first in-air combat tests featuring AI algorithms autonomously piloting an F-16 against a human-piloted F-16 in within-visual-range scenarios, also known as dogfighting. This development marks a significant leap forward in the field of aerospace and AI integration. (Announcement from Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA): https://lnkd.in/gtF6ECgn)
🛩️ What Sets This Achievement Apart?
During these groundbreaking tests, the ACE AI algorithms took control of a specially modified F-16, the X-62A or VISTA, at the Air Force Test Pilot School located at Edwards Air Force Base, California. These tests not only demonstrate technological prowess but also establish a foundational approach for ethical, trusted human-machine teaming in both military and civilian applications.
💡 Implications for the Future
The ACE program's success in these autonomous combat maneuvers highlights the transformative potential of AI in enhancing complex operations. It establishes a new benchmark for the integration of AI in practical and responsible ways, ensuring advancements that can significantly benefit various sectors.
🔗 Engage and Discuss
As these exciting demonstrations continue into 2024, the #DEEPakAI (https://lnkd.in/gHEjMSA5) newsletter invites the community to engage in discussions about the future implications and possibilities of AI in aerospace. Historic Dogfight: Human Pilot vs AI-Controlled Fighter Jet
The US Air Force made history by pitting a human pilot against an AI-controlled F-16 in a dogfight at Edwards Air Force Base in California. The AI-powered X-62A VISTA jet, equipped with machine learning, engaged in close-range combat with a manned F-16, reaching speeds of 1,200 mph and coming within 2,000 feet of each other.
DARPA released footage of the exercise, marking a "transformational moment in aerospace history". The AI algorithm makes instant decisions based on data, mimicking a fighter pilot's instincts. This marks the first use of machine learning to control a fighter jet.
