We live more on a URL than in IRL. We have a duty as a digital citizen. On a recent podcast, Manoj Deshpande Neha Deshpande and I discussed digital civics - the rights and duties of a digital citizen, with a strong focus on good behavior and responsibilities. That discussion was all about extracting good civic behaviors from everyday life like being good to your neighbors, keeping your vicinity clean, showing respect, etc., and drawing a parallel to behavior on the internet. But the nature of the internet itself requires a new framework that looks at all the nuances of chatting and sharing, gaming, phone use, scams, misinformation, etc. To address that, I've extended a new psychological framework loosely based on original work done by Estelle Clements https://lnkd.in/dSx2qUzu

We are in an era where customer support will flow no longer with scripted replies but with cultivated empathy. Employed with wisdom, emotional AI can be this era's catalyst for more intuitive and psychologically attuned enterprises that bring nobility back into our technological incarnations. However, it will take some really thoughtful developers to fully harmonise this capability in the direction of collective growth and consciousness. The journey before us requires nothing less than meeting the emotional awakening of our machines with an equal awakening of our own deepest judgement and values as their creators. An extremely impactful article by our CEO Khadim Batti around the imperative of userization and how it needs to be on every CIO's agenda. Enterprises spend huge on technology - in fact, Gartner estimates that the tech spend in 2025 will hit $5.74 trillion globally, a 9.3% increase from 2024. That is no shock, given the evolution in AI, and sprouting of emerging technologies aiming to drive productivity and increase efficiencies in enterprise operations. But, with such huge outlays, are users really using these technologies? How much of these are underutilized and wasted? The answer: a lot. - 70% of digital transformation efforts fail due to insufficient user engagement (Gartner) - 37% of sales representatives actively use their company’s CRM system, indicating a significant gap between employees and the tools designed to assist them (Salesforce) - inadequate AI skills account for at least 33% of the hurdles employees face in fully utilizing AI tools (IBM) That is exactly why userization needs to be prioritized, to ensure a tech ecosystem where the user experience is at the forefront. I highly urge all leaders, particularly product owners to think about these few questions: 1. What is the adoption rate/utilization of my application(s) 2. How are my users interacting with the application 3. What are some of the friction points in user journeys 4. What could be some of the reasons for lower adoption in certain applications 5. Do we provide contextualized, personalized guidance/training to different segments of users 6. Are we able to measure the impact of these applications from a business standpoint and how it drives key business outcomes (just think of revenue, cost, risk/compliance, brand) If you aren't sure about the answers to these questions, or find yourself getting stuck, I think it's really a signal to you to start thinking about the importance of userization. What happens when a market disruptor teams up with an establishment tech company? Thanks to Madhumita Murgia of Financial Times for sharing my insights from 5 years at Microsoft (first as General Manager of AI Products and Search, then later as Chief AI Technology Officer in the business application group). As we all saw with the marriage of OpenAI and Microsoft, ways of working can clash and lead to crisis. The truth is that behind the scenes, aligning communications approaches and tolerance for risk are huge challenges when a start-up joins a long-time industry leader. The public typically isn’t aware of how disparate teams with unique operating cultures - even at the same company! - don’t always see eye-to-eye on product development, rollout, and sustainment. The road to innovation is never without bumps along the way, but I think both companies (and their leaders) can put the drama behind them to continue pushing AI into its next phase.
