The National Basketball Association (NBA) is in the final stages of media rights negotiations, formalizing written contracts with The Walt Disney Company, NBCUniversal and Amazon this week. Sources report that these negotiations may lead to legal action from incumbent Warner Bros. Discovery. Industry insiders predict that ESPN will pay around $2.6B-$2.8B annually for the league's "A" package, while NBCUniversal's proposed "B" package is expected to be worth between $2.5B and $2.6B annually. Amazon's deal is likely to be worth between $1.8B and $2B, including the Emirates In-Season Tournament, the SoFi Play-In Tournament, first-round playoff games, the WNBA and international rights. ✅🖥️ DIGIDAY (9/20): “The NFL overhauled its app ahead of the season’s kickoff last week, placing its ad-free RedZone streaming service at the center of its NFL+ premium customer offering. At the same time, European soccer leagues including France’s Ligue 1 and Italy’s Serie A have pushed forward with their streaming efforts, with the former’s games now shown online only in the crucial U.K. and Ireland market. Sports organizations know that demand for these services stems, in part, from the complexity (and cost) consumers face when trying to view every televised match their team takes part in. NBA games, for example, are set to be split across four different media providers, while English Premier League fans would have to subscribe to Sky Sports, TNT Sport and Amazon Prime Video to follow their club’s season in its entirety. RedZone is priced lower than cable or streaming packages — $35.99 a year, compared to $59.99 for CBS and Peacock, for example — and has been available through the NFL+ subscription package as a standalone streaming service since 2023. It’s now the centerpiece of the NFL’s digital app, and a major component of the NFL’s attempt to answer that consumer demand for simplicity. The service itself is simple enough — a subscription simulcast that pulls from CBS and Fox’s live Sunday coverage, bouncing between games with no breaks and no ads (though, there is room for advertisers around the edges — DraftKings, for example, currently sponsors RedZone). The 2024 Paris Olympics broke records on and off the field - particularly when it came to audience numbers. According to LG Ad Solutions, 64% of U.S. CTV viewers are more likely to pay attention to ads during live sports. That's a huge opportunity for brands to connect with engaged audiences! While private marketplaces have traditionally dominated live sports advertising, the open marketplace is growing on CTV. ✅🖥️ Nielsen Gauge (8/20): “July also ushered in the beginning of the Summer Olympics in Paris, and despite only three days of coverage included in the July Gauge report, the impact the Games had on TV viewing was evident. Total TV usage was up 2.3% in July compared to the previous month, and up 3.5% compared to July 2023. Broadcast viewing increased slightly this month to 20.3% of TV, but was up 5% compared to a year ago. The category also finished 0.3 points higher than July 2023 when it recorded its lowest share ever (20.0% of TV). When TV usage is isolated by week, the start of Olympics coverage in the final week of July pushed the broadcast average up to over 22% of total TV. This is further emphasized by the fact that the NBCU Olympics coverage accounted for the top five, and seven of the top 10, broadcast telecasts in the July report, with the largest audience averaging 19MM viewers on NBC on Sunday, July 28. Peacock’s coverage of the Olympics vaulted the streamer to 1.5% of TV (+0.3 pt.) and its second best share of TV ever (behind 1.6% in Jan. 2024). Also boosted by viewing to Love Island USA, Peacock’s 33% monthly usage increase in July was the largest for any streaming platform in The Gauge. It was followed by two more streamers with double-digit monthly increases: Amazon Prime Video viewing was up 12% from June to notch 3.4% of TV (+0.3 pt.), its best since November 2023.
