More than half are students of color. Almost half come from low income households. Nearly one third are English Language Learners, and more than 100 languages are represented in our schools. Purpose of Position
As a member of the Legal Services Team, the Staff Counsel will provide cross functional support and assist District staff, including administration, human resources, student services, and building leaders on mitigating and resolving legal matters. This position reports to the Associate General Counsel.

This position reports to the Associate General Counsel.
Supervisory Responsibilities
- None
- Advises personnel on day-to-day operations by answering questions on a wide variety of legal issues including, but not limited to, governance, pupil records, public records, special education, finance, student rights, property, compliance, employment matters, tort liability, Title IX, and general litigation
- Assists in the preparation of written legal opinions and prepares/reviews an assortment of other legal documents including pleadings, written discovery, briefs, motions, contracts, and leases
- Assists with complaints that are filed in relation to discrimination and harassment
- Provides counsel on labor and employment matters, which may include, workers’ compensation, unemployment, Americans with Disabilities Act, Family Medical Leave Act, employee benefits, employment agreements, handbook interpretation, and grievances
- Researches, investigates, and provides representation for grievances
- Litigation preparation
- Reviews custody related court documents and advises on family law matters
- Supports the Title IX Coordinator
- Conducts trainings
- Performs other tasks as assigned by the General and Associate General Counsel
- Juris Doctorate from accredited law school
- Demonstrated acute attention to detail and thoroughness
- Demonstrated excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Demonstrated ability to establish positive relationships with people representing multiple and diverse interests and backgrounds
- Demonstrated ability to navigate sensitive issues in a confidential and professional manner
- Ability to manage varied workload, prioritize tasks and meet deadlines
- All positions require experience working cross-culturally and/or commitment to work toward improving one's own cultural proficiency i.e., valuing difference/diversity, recognizing personal limitations in one's skills and expertise, and having the desire to learn in these areas
- A minimum of two (2) years of experience in private or public practice with comprehensive working knowledge (in two or more areas) of school and corporate law issues related to board governance, administrative law, drafting contracts, special education, pupil and public records, open meeting laws, suspension/expulsion, family law, employment law, and litigation
- Experience as a former educator and/or degree in education
- Active license to practice law in the State of Wisconsin
