GRADE 11: Starting at $24.63 through $25.75 depending on experience and/or education.

Summary

The Educational Interpreter, Sign Language interprets for students who are deaf and hard of hearing; facilitates communication between students, staff, and peers using the student's preferred method of communication.

Essential Functions

  • Interprets/communications input from staff, parents, and peers using the sign system and level agreed upon by a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Reverse-interprets signed communication from the hearing or speech impaired student to staff and hearing peers.
  • Assists in normal classroom routines and procedures by clarifying concepts, reviewing assigned lessons, and actively guiding students in the completion of required work as directed by the teacher and related services staff.
  • Under the supervision of the classroom teacher and/or T-HI (Teacher for Hearing Impaired), prepares lesson and learning materials specific to individual student needs.
  • Serves as liaison between the teacher for students with hearing impairments and general educational staff to ensure that the needs of the student are met.
  • Refers general educational staff questions and/or problems concerning students to the T-HI.
  • Provides tutorial assistance to students under the direction of the classroom or T-HI .
  • Maintains accurate student records as required.
  • Attends staffing and Individualized Education Plan (IEP) meetings. Provides necessary information to IEP team regarding goals associated with communication, socialization, and use of Interpreters.
  • Supports the relationship between the Phoenix Union High School District and the public by demonstrating courteous and professional behavior when interacting with students, parents, visitors, and school staff; maintains absolute confidentiality of work-related issues, client records, and school information; follows Governing Board Policies; performs all other related duties as required or assigned.

Required Qualifications

Education, Training, and Experience Guidelines:

High School diploma or GED equivalent; preferred; AND two years of experience in an educational setting as a sign language interpreter; OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

License And Certification Requirements

A valid Arizona State Driver’s License is required.

Must successfully pass Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment.

Possess an active Arizona Department of Public Safety IVP Fingerprint Clearance Card or obtain one within the first 90 workdays of employment.

Ideal Candidates Will Have The Following Skills And Abilities

  • Knowledge of Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) and/or National Association of the Deaf (NAD) code of ethics and guidelines for educational interpreters.
  • Ability to adapt to the communicative needs of the student.
  • Familiarity with cultural diversity in general, and the deaf culture in particular.
  • Skill in writing professional reports and correspondence from brief instructions.
  • Skill in understanding, explaining, and applying relevant rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Skill in communicating in sign language.
  • Ability to interpret and translate sign language.
  • Ability to determine and adapt to individual student communication needs.
  • Skill in planning, prioritizing, and completing assignments with minimum supervision.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions and procedures.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to provide excellent customer experiences, including but not limited to interacting tactfully and courteously with the public.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Ability to use initiative within organizational policies, procedures and guidelines.
