Academic Success Coach/Advisor

With the purpose of facilitating student success, retention, and graduation, we are seeking an Academic Success Coach/Advisor who will help students achieve their academic goals, serve as the primary point of contact for students who have been or are at-risk of being separated from the University. Through success coaching and academic advising, the Academic Success Coach/Advisor will connect with students during their time away, assist with the transition back to the University, develop holistic success plans, and coach students to reach their graduation goals. The Academic Success Coach/Advisor will help students navigate their academic experience by assisting with proactive academic planning, creative problem solving, and connection to campus resources.

This position reports to the Director of Academic Affairs, with a dotted line to the Senior Director of Student Affairs.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

Student Success

  • Serve as the primary academic advisor & success coach for identified at-risk students to include students returning from academic suspension, students returning from leaves of absence, students on academic probation, and students who will not graduate with their intended cohort.
  • Assist with course planning and registration.
  • Troubleshoot problems with registration and refer students to support services to facilitate success.
  • Connect students to campus resources, such as case management, student disability services, and mental health services.
  • Advise students on academic opportunities, requirements, policies, and procedures.
  • Create and maintain accurate academic records using degree audit software and SIS, document student meetings and notes in the student information database.
  • Work with students returning from leave to develop and implement student success plans.
  • Meet with students in this cohort individually at least once each semester.
  • Provide coaching for students on topics such as time and task management, organization, academic life skills, test-taking strategies, and executive functioning.
  • Develop and implement intentional outreach strategies for students who have been or are at-risk of being separated from the University.
  • Serve on the CARE team, working with cross-campus partners to develop and implement action plans to support students in need.
  • Serve as liaison to Student Disability Services for students in need of academic accommodations.
  • Be as highly visible and accessible resource for advisees.
  • Address family inquiries as appropriate.


Student Supervision and Program Management

  • Select, train, and supervise a team of peer tutors.
  • Connect students with tutors and track student engagement with tutoring services.
  • Establish connections with Homewood academic support to explore resources available for Peabody students.
  • Assess trends in student academic needs and work to address these concerns through programs and services.


Student Tracking

  • Track student progress by running reports, analyzing student data, and communicating with students regarding registration, grades, and graduation.
  • Work with the Associate Director for Student Support to provide early interventions for “at-risk” students identified by faculty and others in each academic term.
  • Troubleshoot academic problems, monitor academic progress and standing, and advise on policies and procedures.


Training and Education

  • Educate incoming student about academic expectations.
  • Plan ongoing support (retreats, 1-on-1 meetings) with students on academic probation or returning from suspension.
  • Create, coordinate, and deliver workshops on various academic and student success topics, such as time management, organization, note-taking, and study strategies


Special Knowledge, Skills And Abilities

  • Understanding of student development theory and current academic advising practices.
  • Ability to interact productively with faculty, administrators, students and other academic and administrative departments.
  • Excellent communication and consensus building skills.
  • Demonstrated success in providing friendly, high quality customer services and effective outreach abilities.
  • Knowledge of best practices for student retention initiatives.
  • Knowledge of at-risk student populations and interventions.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to use common technology platforms.
  • Demonstrated cultural competence.
  • Ability to provide academic coaching or success coaching to at-risk student populations.
  • Knowledge of high achieving student populations.
  • Knowledge of co-curricular academic experiences necessary for a comprehensive undergraduate experience.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Master's Degree.
  • Three year's experience.
  • Additional experience may substitute for advanced education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Three years of experience with higher education advising and retention experience.
  • Certification as an Executive Coach and/or significant experience supporting those with executive functioning needs.

Not all candidates will be eligible for the upper end of the salary range. Exact salary will ultimately depend on multiple factors, which may include the successful candidate's geographic location, skills, work experience, market conditions, education/training and other qualifications. Education and Experience Equivalency

Please refer to the job description above to see which forms of equivalency are permitted for this position. If permitted, equivalencies will follow these guidelines: JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination.
