The University of Iowa Department of Neurology is seeking an Accountant to exercise basic accounting control for the department by performing functions related to budgets, accounting systems, payroll, and operational activities. Duties include coordinating and monitoring departmental expenditures, assisting in preparation of operating budgets, and creating and maintaining spreadsheets. This position is also dedicated to the Neurology Education Division, to support the financial and event planning activities within budgetary guidelines.

Schedule: Shifts will be scheduled between Monday-Friday. This position does not work holidays or weekends.

The Department of Neurology, founded in 1919, was one of the first academic departments of neurology in the nation and the first to be established west of the Mississippi River. The Department of Neurology's hallmark is its history of carefully integrating patient care, scientific investigation, and education of medical, postdoctoral, and graduate students.

Position Responsibilities
- Monitor financial activities for more than 200 department accounts, including Foundation accounts, appropriations, gift accounts, and clinical revenue accounts. Open, monitor and close existing accounts within established guidelines by the University.
- Serve as the resource for all accounting related questions for both internal and external parties.
- Maintain records and reconcile accounts, tracking income and expenditures, auditing statements, and providing special reporting.
- Reconcile vouchers against purchase orders, invoices and procurement card charges resolving any discrepancies/irregularities.
- Initiate P-Reqs and e-vouchers, track standing orders, contracts, allowances, etc. Process electronic change vouchers.
- Process ProTrav (travel) requests, ensuring proper approvals and funding is available.
- E-deposit of all non-Foundation checks and observation fees.
- Perform designated departmental accounts receivable activities, including billing for all legal depositions, record reviews and medical reports provided by department faculty and staff. Follow up on delinquent payments.
- Prepare periodic and ad hoc reports for Departmental/Institutional leaders and external agencies.
- Prepare original and corrected accounting entries.
- Assist in development and maintenance of account databases and reporting.
- Assist in preparation of department operating budget.
- Assist with organization of Education events, such as graduation, wellness retreats, and tracking of compliances.
- Asist with development and ongoing monitoring of a defined Education budget, involving UI and UICA funding sources.
- Serve as post-award accounting back up for Research Support Specialist.
- Contribute to implementation of policies and procedures related to accounting and reporting standards per University and UI Health Care guidelines.
- Assist in performing complex financial analyses and projections for annual budget requests.
- Confer with representatives of schools, departments, or other reporting units to arrange for and gather data and to discuss report requirements.
- Monitor provider professional development allocations and expenditures.
- Assist faculty and staff with appropriate use of professional development funds.
- Provide training in accounting systems for staff, as needed.

Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Degree in Accounting or Finance preferred.
- Minimum of two years of accounting experience.
- Must be proficient in all Microsoft Office Suite software applications, including Excel.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Demonstrated ability to work in a team setting.
- Experience managing complex information requiring attention to detail.
- Experience with budget preparation and monitoring.
- Ability to create, manipulate and extensively use Excel spreadsheets.
- Knowledge of University of Iowa policies, procedures, and regulations.
