SDOT has an exciting opportunity for an Accounts Payable Senior Accountant on our Finance and Administration (FAD) team. Under the direction of the Accounts Payable & Payroll Manager, this key team member assists in managing SDOT’s Accounts Payable unit. The person in this role is responsible for supervising and training Accounting Technicians and providing efficient and accurate high-volume transaction processing to pay vendors on time. You will work closely with the entire Accounting team, all divisions of SDOT, and external auditors. Accounting responsibilities include accruals, general ledger account reconciliations, and tax filings. Come help keep Seattle moving!

Job Responsibilities

  • Assists in overseeing SDOT’s Accounts Payable (AP) operations, including providing supervision and training to Accounting Technicians, administering the commercial credit card program, and Public Works and consultant contract invoice review.
  • Ensures AP transactions comply with City policies, GAAP/GASB, and any other applicable regulation or contract terms.
  • Assists with the implementation and on-going management of Optical Character Recognition software.
  • Coordinates with SDOT’s Procurement team to obtain approved purchase orders and completed receipts and with SDOT divisions to obtain coding and approval of non-PO items.
  • Develops and maintains an in-depth knowledge of the City of Seattle’s Peoplesoft software, including General Ledger, Accounts Payables, Asset Management, and other related systems and processes.
  • Performs monthly and fiscal year-end closing processes, including journal entries, reconciliations, and accruals.
  • Develops, review, and maintain documentation of AP processes and procedures with focus on internal controls, best practices, and continuous process improvement.
  • Coordinates our AP responses, including organized documentation and explanations, to financial and accountability audits by State and Federal agency auditors.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

Education

  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, or related field (including satisfactory completion of at least 24 semester hours or 36 quarter credit units in accounting with no substitution allowed).

Experience:

  • Three (3) years of professional experience in governmental accounting.

OR: An equivalent combination of education and experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the position duties.

Though not requirements, strong candidates will have some of the following experience or are able to describe comparable experience:

  • Extensive experience with an ERP financial reporting system similar to the City’s PeopleSoft 9.2 system, including query writing and report creation.
  • Strong working knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles and governmental accounting standards.
  • Excellent organization skills, ability to respond to unanticipated requests, prioritize work, work under pressure and meet tight deadlines.
  • Strong interpersonal and written and oral communication skills.
  • Customer service focus with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated initiative for anticipating and detecting problems and developing solutions using sound judgment.
  • Intermediate to advanced proficiency in MS Excel, Word, Access, and SharePoint.
  • Ability to effectively work in a multi-cultural workplace with a diverse customer base.

Work Environment / Physical Demands:

  • Work is typically performed in a hybrid work environment in which a minimum of 3 days of the work is completed in a City office, and 2 days of the work is completed remotely in a regular 40-hour work week.
