Job Description

The Arts Director serves as a member of the Bronx Arts' leadership team and undertakes a range of supervisory and administrative duties to ensure the effective execution of the entire K-8 Arts program. This role involves providing guidance in developing, executing, and assessing the arts program to enhance student learning and teacher performance within the educational system. Additionally, the employee identifies and assesses new trends in the arts and shares this knowledge with the school community.

Instructional And Program Management

  • Direct the development, evaluation, revision and alignment of fine arts curriculum K-8 in the areas of instrumental music, vocal music, visual art, drama/theater and nonathletic extracurricular activities.
  • Serve as the school’s contact on all non-athletic, extracurricular matters.
  • Direct, organize and coordinate the development of new and/or innovative fine arts programs for the school.
  • Work with all fine arts teachers and non-athletic extracurricular activities sponsors on educational and administrative procedural needs of their programs.
  • Develop and maintain an inventory of all fine arts equipment for each school in the school.
  • Assist in making travel arrangements for all fine arts and non-athletic student groups, as required.
  • Plan and manage school-wide fine arts and non-athletic extracurricular activities.
  • Arrange for staff development, workshops, clinics, and staff meetings designed to improve instruction.
  • Review and evaluate latest developments in the fine arts curriculum.

Budget

  • Work with Director of Finance and campus principals regarding fine arts budgets, purchasing and scheduling.
  • Develop and monitor all extracurricular budgets in the fine arts and non-athletic extracurricular areas.
  • Prepare specifications for fine arts bids and supervise the purchase of fine arts programming materials and equipment.

Personnel Management

  • Assist with recruitment, selection and training of personnel and make sound recommendations relative to Arts department personnel placement, assignment, retention, discipline and dismissal.

Community Relations

  • Showcase adept utilization of suitable and impactful methods to foster community and parental engagement.
  • Clearly communicate the school's mission, educational philosophy, and curriculum execution strategies to the community, seeking its backing in achieving the school's objectives.
  • Exhibit a keen understanding of the requirements of the school-community and take the initiative to organize endeavors that fulfill those needs.
  • Fulfill any additional responsibilities as designated.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Supervise and evaluate the performance of support staff in the fine arts department.

Requirements

Qualifications

Education Requirements

  • Bachelor of Fine Arts
  • Master's in Arts Education, preferred

Certification

  • NYS Teacher certification, preferred
  • NYS School Building Leader, preferred

Experience

  • Five years teaching experience in at least one of the areas of fine arts
  • Leadership responsibility in an area of fine arts
  • Professional experience in an area of fine arts

Special Knowledge/Skills

  • Proficiency in program development and budget management is crucial.
  • A thorough understanding of the operational aspects of music, art, theater, and dance, as well as academic extracurricular programs, is necessary.
  • The candidate should exhibit strong leadership, written, and communication skills and be familiar with state regulations related to extracurricular activities.
  • It is essential to have the capability to oversee budgets and personnel, coordinate school-wide events, and accurately interpret policies, procedures, and data.
  • Strong communication, public relations, and interpersonal skills are also vital for success in this position.
