KTVB-TV, the TEGNA-owned affiliate in Boise, ID is seeking an Assignment Editor to join our award-winning team in beautiful Boise, Idaho.

The Assignment Editor is the heart of the newsroom and will collaborate with the leadership team on daily news-gathering efforts. The ideal candidate is an experienced journalist with solid news judgement and strong communication skills.

This role is responsible for curating the best local stories and coordinating our newsroom staff. They will have a pulse on what newsroom crews need to know - including what breaking news just hit Twitter, what’s trending on our website, and the topics locals can’t stop talking about on social media.

You’ll be thinking equally about our content on TV and our digital platforms while ensuring no valuable reader tip (or point of view) falls through the cracks.

This is a role for someone who thrives in high-energy positions and has a keen ability to balance multiple tasks in stressful situations. This position also assists with producing, writing, and publishing digital content.

Responsibilities

  • Organizes and runs morning and afternoon news editorial meetings
  • Maintains daily assignment lists for crews and planning calendar with events, news conferences, court cases, etc.
  • Monitors newsroom email, answers newsroom phone, and manages the voicemail inbox
  • Reviews and organizes news releases
  • Identifies for leadership team newsworthy events/items ahead of time so resources can be planned and assigned to those stories
  • Alerts newsroom stakeholders to breaking news 
  • Adjusts crew assignments as necessary to cover developing/breaking news
  • Continually keeps crews informed of story developments and relays information to newsroom personnel
  • Maintains and develops content team’s contact list ensuring diversity in sources
  • Assists crews with court requests and access
  • Monitors regional and national digital TEGNA content, curating select content for our audiences
  • Social listening and moderation
  • Scours various digital sources for story ideas 
  • Vet and research story ideas for coverage possibilities, sets them up as requested
  • Routes and records video feeds
  • Responds to video requests and sends approved videos to requesting sources
  • Maintains newsroom monitors to keep information on them visible and useful for crews
  • Represents KTVB and TEGNA professionally in all interactions

Requirements

  • BA/BS in journalism, communication or related field preferred or equivalent years of experience
  • At least 2 years of professional experience preferred
  • Understanding the tenants of professional journalism
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Experienced in making strong journalistic and ethical decisions in fast-paced environment
  • Punctual, consistent, efficient, curious, fair
  • Considerate to all story topics and angles
  • Works well with a broad range of personalities and opinions
  • Excels at multitasking under pressure
  • The ability to be a technical troubleshooting MacGyver is a plus
