WVEC 13News Now is looking for an Assignment Editor to join our award-winning team in beautiful Norfolk, VA.
The Assignment Editor is the heart of the newsroom and will collaborate with the leadership team on daily news-gathering efforts. The ideal candidate is an experienced journalist with solid news judgment and effective communication skills.
This role will have a pulse on what newsroom crews need to know - including what breaking news just hit Twitter, what’s trending on our website, and the topics locals can’t stop talking about on social media.
You will be thinking equally about our content on TV and our digital platforms while ensuring no valuable reader tip (or point of view) falls through the cracks.
This is a role for someone who thrives in high-energy positions and has a keen ability to balance multiple tasks under pressure. This position also assists with publishing digital content.
This is a full-time, non-remote position that reports to the Assignment Manager.
Responsibilities
Maintains daily assignment list and planning calendar
Monitors newsroom email, answers newsroom phone, and manages the voicemail inbox
Reviews and organizes news releases
Identifies newsworthy events/items ahead of time and collaborates with newsroom leadership to plan and assign stories
Alerts station personnel to breaking news
Adjusts crews as necessary to cover developing/breaking news
Continually keeps crews informed of story developments, relaying vital information to newsroom personnel
Maintains and develops content team’s contact list ensuring diversity in sources
Files court access requests
Monitors regional and national digital TEGNA content, curating select content for our audiences
Social listening and moderation
Scours various digital sources for story ideas
Vets story ideas for coverage possibilities, sets them up as requested
Routes and records video feeds
Responds to video requests and sends approved videos to requesting sources
Maintains newsroom displays, keeping information visible and relevant for crews
Posts breaking digital news, sends push alerts and assigns story follow-ups as needed
Represents 13News Now and TEGNA professionally in all interactions
Requirements
BA/BS in journalism, communication, or related field preferred
At least 2 years of professional experience preferred
Understanding the tenants of ethical journalism
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
Experienced in making strong journalistic and ethical decisions in a fast-paced environment
Punctual, consistent, efficient, curious, fair
Considerate of all story topics and angles
Works well with a broad range of personalities and opinions
Excels at multitasking under pressure
The ability to be a technical troubleshooter is a plus
