The Department of Engineering Education (EED; https://eed.osu.edu/) and embedded Integrated Business & Engineering Program (IBE: https://engineering.osu.edu/integrated-business-engineering-honors-program) in collaboration with the Center for Software Innovation (CSI: https://software.osu.edu/) at The Ohio State University invite applications for a regular, 12-month, practice-track appointment in the area of Engineering Education and Software Innovation. This position will start as early as July 1, 2025.

Position Overview

We seek applicants with a software background to advance the mission of the Center for Software Innovation and the newly established Integrated Business & Engineering, Software Innovation track (IBE-SI). The IBE program was established in 2014. The new Software Innovation (SI) track enrolled its first class of students in Autumn 2023. The faculty member hired for this position is expected to support CSI, IBE-SI, EED and future expansion of SI-related initiatives and courses across the OSU community. This position will be housed within the EED. Additional service expectations for the department will also be expected.

Skills

You will be joining a highly collaborative community as part of the Center for Software Innovation (CSI), which seeks to equip innovators with the skills, tools, and resources to build the digital economy. As a faculty member aligned with the CSI, you will be expected to participate in a variety of scholarly activities that contribute to the CSI mission's overall success. These include working with the CSI in:

  • Development of courses and learning outcomes in alignment with the objectives of the CSI
  • Meeting with industry partners, individuals, and focus groups to understand the skillset students need
  • Collaborating to develop hands-on experiential learning opportunities (e.g., lectures from industry professionals, workshops focused on application, and student project development)
  • Partnership in developing general thought leadership content to be marketed by the CSI
  • Leading or participating in learning sessions that include the broader, off campus community
  • Providing service in the form of mentorship and input related to new software ventures and innovation

Qualifications

Required:

  • A Ph.D. or other terminal degree in engineering, computer science, engineering education or another field of study relevant to the area of software innovation or demonstrated work experience in software / technology industry
  • Proven skills and experience in innovative software strategy, design, development, and launch.
  • Demonstrated evidence of successful teaching and/or mentoring of teams (students or employees) in engineering and/or business contexts
  • Demonstrated excellence in oral, written, and graphical communication
  • Excellent interpersonal skills when working with both external and internal colleagues or interdisciplinary teams
  • Demonstrated efforts in research, teaching, and/or outreach and engagement that reflect Ohio State’s Shared Values

Desired

  • Prior demonstrated leadership and effective collaboration in a professional or academic setting.
  • Prior experience or training in teaching and/or mentorship of technical teams.
  • Willingness to work independently and as a proactive self-starter with strong project leadership skills.
  • Open to sharing ideas, continuously learning, and displaying innovative thinking.

The EED’s mission includes advancing the engineering profession and enabling student success by:

  • Contributing to developing world-class scholarship in engineering education.
  • Modeling and advocating scholarly, evidence-based teaching within the College of Engineering.
  • Developing and delivering state-of-the-art, innovative, multidisciplinary courses and programs in first-year engineering, engineering technical communication, multidisciplinary capstone design, and graduate education in engineering education.

The EED was created in November 2015. The EED curriculum is centered around first-year engineering courses, technical communication, multi-disciplinary capstone, other specialized courses and programs, and a doctoral program in engineering education. About 4,000 undergraduate students enroll each year in the first-year engineering courses, about 900 undergraduate students in the technical communications courses, and about 100 undergraduate students in the multidisciplinary capstone courses. In Autumn 2024, 26 graduate students were enrolled in the engineering education doctoral program.

Housed in the EED, the Integrated Business and Engineering (IBE) Honors Program is a challenging four-year program designed to help prepare the next generation of business and technology leaders to operate effectively across business and technical domains, and to learn an interdisciplinary approach to problem solving. The Ohio State University’s College of Engineering and Fisher College of Business jointly offer the multidisciplinary undergraduate IBE honors program where engineering and business students take classes, attack real-world problems and network with industry leaders throughout their undergraduate experience. The program supplements the standard engineering or business curriculum with core courses of the opposite degree and includes a sequence of dedicated IBE courses and seminars focused on experiential, entrepreneurial and multidisciplinary learning. In class, IBE students work in teams to solve problems and create solutions while applying classroom theory and learning.
