Primary Purpose Of Organizational Unit

The Department of Cell Biology and Physiology ( CBP ) is a broad and interdisciplinary basic science department in the School of Medicine at UNC -CH. As a top-ranked, nationally recognized leader in basic science research, our faculty and staff are engaged in innovative and cutting-edge research in the areas of neuroscience, cardiovascular biology, cellular cytoskeleton, cell motility and imaging. The CBP breadth of investigation is reflected in our interdisciplinary Cell Biology and Physiology Curriculum, which provides a comprehensive, integrated biological foundation and emphasizes rigor, transparency, integrity, and creative scientific reasoning. The department also has 2 Core Facilities to expedite the mission of our researchers.

Position Summary

The Department of Cell Biology and Physiology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is seeking a full-time Assistant Director of Research. This position will report to the Director of Research of Cell Biology and Physiology and work side-by-side with the administrative staff. This position assist the Director of Research in providing high level management of all aspects of departmental strategic initiatives, organizational partnerships, and academic missions. This position will provide advanced project management for multidisciplinary research in coordination with the PI .

The Assistant Director of Research position should strive to develop a working understanding of the types of research taking place in labs across the Department and School of Medicine to enable the identification of relevant opportunities, the dissemination of appropriate information, and solicitation of feedback. The position will assist the Director of Research in assembling research teams qualified to apply for grants, providing administrative support for all aspects of assembling the applications, writing sections of the application as needed, drafting quarterly or annual reports, organizing conferences or site visits. Work requires exercise of independent judgment and initiative and is performed under the supervision of the Director of Research.

Minimum Education And Experience Requirements

Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree required (or foreign degree equivalent); for candidates demonstrating comparable independent research productivity, will accept a relevant Bachelor’s degree (or foreign degree equivalent) and 3 or more years of relevant experience in substitution. May require terminal degree and licensure.

Required Qualifications, Competencies, And Experience

Must have experience working in a laboratory environment and applying for funding. Experience with project management and the ability to work independently.

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, And Experience

The ideal candidate will have a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree (PhD encouraged) in biomedical science with 3-5 years of experience in the laboratory. Ideal candidates would also have management level experience in an academic or industry setting, with excellent organizational, communication, and writing skills. A publication and funding track record is a plus. Scientific experience in the fields of cell biology or physiology is preferred. The ideal candidate for this position should be a strategic thinker, highly organized, able to work independently yet collaboratively, exhibit effective management and problem-solving skills.
