The Los Angeles Times is looking for a temporary assistant editor to work with its Entertainment team roughly October through January. Successful candidates should have experience collaborating with staff writers and managing freelance assignments. They should have deep experience developing original story angles in a highly competitive field; editing for clarity, structure and tone; and writing headlines.

This versatile editor will edit a range of work for our website, our newsletters and our awards magazine, The Envelope. Subjects may include movies, TV, books or fine arts. Experience editing content related to Oscars and Grammys races is a plus, as is the ability to navigate the Hollywood publicity world with skill, savvy and professionalism.

The editor will build freelance articles in our content management system and should be comfortable communicating on Slack with members of our newsroom, including art directors, photo editors and the copy desk. This position is based in California but can be done remotely. The position will require flexible hours and occasional weekend duty.

Requirements

  • A minimum of five years of editing experience
  • Excellent line-editing skills with a focus on sharp story angles and accuracy
  • Confidence editing on deadline and shepherding breaking news
  • A knack for tapping into the cultural conversations of the moment
  • Knowledge of Hollywood’s awards infrastructure and related story cycles
  • Ability to write engaging headlines
  • Knowledge of SEO best practices
  • Ability to learn a content management system and build articles for publication
  • Ability to communicate effectively while working remotely
  • Appreciation for the ethical standards of a major news organization

Qualified candidates should submit a resume and cover letter via the link below to Assistant Managing Editor Craig Nakano and Envelope Editor Elena Howe. Please be sure to submit your materials through the link in this posting.
