The Associate Chair and Chief Flight Instructor shall have the primary responsibility of supporting the Chair of Aviation and Safety in maximizing the operating performance of the Aviation and Safety Department while achieving institutional goals. This position shall perform as the program’s faculty advisor for students enrolled in the B.S. degree in Aeronautical Science with a concentration in flight education. This student centric position shall be responsible to deliver service excellence support to meet the needs of the University and industry community. This position shall report to the Chair of Aviation and Safety.

Essential Functions

  • Oversees department committees. This entails monitoring the committees to make sure they are doing the work in a timely and appropriate manner and reporting any potential or actual issues to the department chair.
  • Reviews and updates departmental handbooks
  • Plays a major role in coordinating our department for APR review, including compiling and composing documents, reports, and letters.
  • Serves on the Advisory Council and meets at scheduled times with the department chair to discuss ongoing projects/efforts such as student recruitment and retention, departmental issues including funding and hiring, and upcoming events.
  • Serves as acting chair when the department chair is out of the office.
  • Maintains all FAA related records for the flight training program; including student flight records in coordination with the TPA flight training provider.
  • Oversees the flight safety protocols and maintains the TCO certificates and curriculum for the University’s Air Worthiness FAR Part 141.
  • Maintains FAR Pat 141 records for flight students.
  • Serves as faculty advisor for students enrolled in the B.S. in Aeronautical Science degree with a concentration in Flight Education.
  • Serves as the faculty advisor for the student fraternity Alpha Eta Rho and Flight Team.
  • Assists students with scholarship and internship applications.
  • A thorough understanding of technology, learning management systems, and computer applications is essential (i.e. Blackboard, Canvas, Powercampus, Jenzabar, LinkedIn Learning).
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities as required or deemed appropriate to the accomplishments of the responsibilities and functions of the Human Resources department.
  • The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that logically relate to the position.

Required Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities

  • Have or have had an FAA Private Pilot License, Instrument Rating, Commercial Pilot License, Multi-Engine with Instrument rating, ATP license with a minimum of 2000 flight hours.
  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite, as well as knowledge and understanding of the organizational structure, workflow, and operating procedures.
  • Familiar with Jenzabar technology suite for higher education a plus.
  • Ability to handle information of sensitive and confidential nature in the utmost professional manner. Demonstrate a high level of professionalism, initiative, resourcefulness, and personal accountability.
  • Maintain the privacy and confidentiality of information, protect the assets of the institution, act ethically and with integrity, and adhere to FMU’s Code of Conduct and policies and procedures.
  • Effective analytical and decision-making skills. Excellent communication (oral and written), organizational, and time management skills. Effective interpersonal skills and ability to work with diverse constituents.
  • Attention to detail and adaptability to a changing environment is extremely important as well as dependability.
  • Manage, prioritize, and accomplish multiple tasks/projects simultaneously in a deadline-driven environment.
  • Moderate physical activity. Requires handling objects of average weight up to (20) twenty pounds or standing and/or walking for more than four (4) hours per day.

Minimum Requirements

  • A Ph.D. or a Master's degree in an aviation-related field, such as Flight Education, Aviation-Airport Management, or Air Traffic Control (ATC).
  • Higher education experience is preferred.
  • FAA Private Pilot License, Instrument Rating, Commercial Pilots License, Multi-Engine with Instrument rating is required. (Currency is not required).
  • ATP license with a minimum of 2000 flight hours is required.
  • Ability to maintain a flexible work schedule that may include working nights and weekends (if applicable).
