Position Overview

Primary Purpose Of Position

North Carolina Agricultural and Technical (A&T) State University invites applications and nominations for the position of Associate Dean of Research and Innovation ( ADRI ).

The ADRI reports to the Dean of the John R and Kathy R Hairston College of Health and Human Sciences ( HCHHS ) and is a member of the College Leadership Team.

The ADRI is responsible for developing and implementing the vision, plan, and policies to guide the college’s research goals and outcomes, and for leading all aspects of the college’s research infrastructure and operations.

The ADRI is expected to work closely and collaboratively with faculty, department chairs, and staff.

The Associate Dean will provide leadership to the research and innovation arm of the college and is responsible for increasing sponsored research; encouraging and supporting HCHHS investigators; facilitating multidisciplinary projects; seeking out new sources of funding; connecting the departments and the school of nursing in innovative and creative ways for success in the research funding space; and, overseeing the ethical, informed and safe conduct of research.

The ADRI will have academic and scientific experience in conducting and managing research programs; securing external funding; familiarity with federal grant finance and compliance issues; experience evaluating research proposals; and, will possess the leadership qualities and abilities needed to help the college achieve its vision of being internationally acclaimed for its interdisciplinary and innovative research.

Specific responsibilities of the ADRI include: mentoring faculty (especially junior faculty) on research career issues; providing leadership and oversight for the research committee; assisting faculty with overseeing their research budgets and programs; evaluating research center opportunities; evaluating and approving indirect cost waivers; evaluating grant cost-sharing opportunities and presenting the evaluation to the dean; fostering collaborative, interdisciplinary research between departments and between the school of nursing and other academic units at NC A&T; working with the Division of Research and Economic Development ( DORED ) on all aspects of research administration including compliance and financial issues.

Primary Function Of Organizational Unit

An 1890 Land Grant University, North Carolina A&T State University enjoys a long-standing national reputation in learning, discovery, and engagement.

With a student body more than 13,000 and approximately 500 faculty, North Carolina A&T offers undergraduate and graduate degrees through nine colleges.

North Carolina A&T State University offers over 90-degree programs at the bachelor, masters and doctoral levels.

The University is one of the sixteen constituent units of the University of North Carolina ( UNC ) and is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools ( SACS ).

The strategic vision focuses the University on interdisciplinary scholarly activities in a learner-centered environment.

The Hairston College of Health and Human Sciences houses the Departments of Kinesiology, Psychology, Social Work and Sociology, School of Nursing, Speech Communication/Health Communication Program, and the Health Service Management Program.

Through innovative programs and high impact and student-centered pedagogy, faculty in the college foster an inter-professional learning environment for undergraduate and graduate students.

Faculty also engage in scholarly and service activities at the department, school, college, university, and community levels, and within professional organizations. Social justice and promotion of health equity are integral components of the mission of the college.

Minimum Requirements

  • Doctorate with five (5) years of experience in funded research.

Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education

  • The preferred candidate will have an earned doctorate (preferably Ph.D.), experience with managing large research programs, externally funded research, and administrative leadership experience in a research environment.
  • In addition, the candidate should have demonstrated success as an administrator and fiscal manager, a record of success in procuring and managing sponsored research programs, and experience in research policy formation, compliance, and operation.
  • The successful candidate will have demonstrated the ability to work collaboratively with various internal and external constituencies, promote interdisciplinary research, and work with a culturally diverse population.
  • The successful candidate must also have the ability to develop the college’s research infrastructure, including a focus on faculty research training.
