Associate Director, Program Management, Research & Preclinical Programs

The Role:

Moderna is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Associate Director to lead and oversee program managers within our research and preclinical stage programs. This role will involve strategic oversight and coordination of multiple programs, ensuring alignment with corporate objectives and milestones. The successful candidate will be pivotal in driving the advancement of our mRNA technology and therapeutic programs by managing a team of program managers and providing leadership across various initiatives.

Here's What You’ll Do:

  • Program Management Oversight: Lead and oversee program managers responsible for the planning, implementation, and tracking of research and preclinical programs. Ensure programs are completed on time, within scope, and within budget.
  • Strategic Collaboration: Collaborate with project leads to develop, prioritize, and execute program strategies that align with Moderna's goals. Facilitate the translation of strategic objectives into operational plans. Provide support to scenario planning and governance presentations.
  • Build and Facilitate Cross-functional Teams: Collaborate with R&D, finance, regulatory, nonclinical drug discovery sciences, technical development, CMC, and clinical teams to ensure seamless program execution. Lead cross-functional program teams to achieve key milestones.
  • Risk Management: Identify and manage potential risks and issues that may impact program timelines and deliverables, including timely escalation of risks to the critical path. Develop mitigation plans and ensure proactive communication with stakeholders.
  • Stakeholder Communication: Maintain regular communication with internal and external stakeholders. Provide updates on program progress, challenges, and achievements.
  • Documentation and Reporting: Ensure comprehensive documentation of program activities. Prepare detailed reports for senior leadership and external partners.
  • Budget Management: Coordinate with finance and program teams to implement and track program budget and forecasts.


Here’s What You’ll Bring to the Table:

  • Education: Master's degree in a relevant scientific discipline, including background in autoimmune, rare disease, immuno-oncology or cancer vaccine fields.
  • Experience: 10-12 years of relevant experience in program management within the biotechnology or pharmaceutical industry, with a focus on research and preclinical development. Proven success in managing programs from research through to IND filing and transitioning programs into the clinic. Laboratory experience and prior experience as a scientific project lead in a biotechnology setting is preferred.
  • Knowledge: Strong understanding of early drug development, including the transition of novel candidates from research through IND filing and initiation of first-in-human studies.
  • Leadership: Demonstrated experience in leading and managing cross-functional teams. Proven ability to drive complex projects to successful completion. Management experience, including overseeing other program managers, is highly preferred.
  • Skills: Strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills. Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Tools: Strong knowledge of project management tools and software. Experience with Smartsheet is highly desirable.
  • Versatility: Ability to quickly adapt, learn, and pivot into new therapeutic areas, demonstrating flexibility and responsiveness to changing program needs and assignments.
  • Attributes: Self-motivated, proactive, and able to work both independently and as part of a team. Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to influence and inspire others.
