ROLE SUMMARY:

As an Associate In-House Counsel, you will play a vital role in providing legal advice and support to our company on a wide range of legal matters. Reporting directly to the SVP of Legal, you will be responsible for handling various legal issues that impact our business operations and strategic initiatives. This position requires a proactive approach, strong legal expertise, and the ability to work collaboratively with different departments to achieve corporate goals while ensuring legal compliance.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Legal Advice, Counseling, & Risk Management:
    • Provide legal advice and guidance to management and business units on legal issues affecting the company
    • Analyze and interpret insurance, landlord-tenant, and other laws, regulations, and guidelines relevant to the company's operations
    • Identify legal risks and propose appropriate measures to mitigate risks to the company
    • Develop and implement strategies to minimize legal exposure and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements
    • Assist the legal department with coordination of cross-functional projects
    • Collaborate with internal stakeholders, including legal, finance, and operations teams, to address risk-related issues and concerns
    • Communicate project status updates and milestones to stakeholders
  • Contract Review and Negotiation:
    • Draft, review, and negotiate a wide range of contracts, including vendor agreements, service agreements, and other commercial contracts
    • Ensure that contracts comply with legal requirements and company policies
    • Serve as the initial point of contact for contract-related inquiries and negotiations
    • Manage the contract lifecycle from initiation to execution, ensuring compliance with company policies and legal requirements
  • Employment Law and HR Support:
    • Provide legal support on employment law matters, including reviewing employment agreements, policies, and advising on HR issues
    • Assist in investigations and responses to employment-related claims
  • Intellectual Property:
    • Support intellectual property matters, including trademark and copyright issues, licensing agreements, and protection of intellectual property rights
Qualifications:

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an accredited law school and active membership in good standing with the state Bar
  • Minimum of 2-3 years of experience practicing law, preferably with significant experience working as in-house counsel or in a corporate legal department.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to think strategically and provide practical legal advice
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to effectively interact with stakeholders at all levels of the organization
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, with a high level of professionalism and integrity

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in the multifamily industry and with insurance law and/or landlord-tenant law
