We have an opportunity at our corporate offices in Chicago for a Associate Managing Editor - JAMA Medical News (Internal title-Associate Managing Editor) on our Scientific Publication team. This is a hybrid position reporting into our Chicago, IL office.
As a Associate Managing Editor - JAMA Medical News, you will provide editorial and managerial support to the Editor/Department Director of JAMA’s Medical News & Perspectives section to ensure that an accurate, timely, informative, and interesting news section is prepared each week.

As a Associate Managing Editor - JAMA Medical News, you will provide editorial and managerial support to the Editor/Department Director of JAMA’s Medical News & Perspectives section to ensure that an accurate, timely, informative, and interesting news section is prepared each week.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Writing
- Pitch, report, and write news stories and features for publication in the Medical News & Perspectives section of JAMA.
- Ensure that stories are accurate, clear, coherent, and consistent in style and tone.
- Translate medical research and topics into highly readable and interesting stories for clinicians, researchers, and the lay public.
- Stay up to date on developments in medical science, health trends, and current events.
- File graphics requests and obtain necessary patient permissions and conflict of interest disclosures from interviewees.
- Assist the Director in developing and editing articles written by staff and freelance writers and in developing illustrations.
- Edit content for clarity, style, and accuracy.
- Ensure that stories adhere to guidance and standards.
- Assist the Director in the weekly production of the section.
- Assist the Director in the development of podcasts and videos.
- Assist the Director in developing innovations to enhance the department’s mission.
- Oversee the writing, editing, and production of the Medical News & Perspectives section and management of staff and freelancers in the absence of the Director.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Bachelor’s degree in journalism, English, communications, or scientific field required.
- At least 5 years of experience in health or science journalism required.
- Excellent writing and editing skills required.
- Some managerial experience preferred.
- Strong interpersonal and verbal communication skills required.
- Well-developed skills in building and maintaining relationships needed.
- Demonstrated ability to perform successfully in a high-visibility team environment and be a strong individual contributor.
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects within deadlines.
- Computer literacy required, including expertise with Microsoft Word.
- Some evening and weekend work and travel required.
