Responsibilities
The College of Life Sciences at Thomas Jefferson University seeks to fill multiple ongoing, full-time faculty positions. Candidates should have a strong commitment to undergraduate biology education. Educational responsibilities include teaching introductory and upper-level biology courses including lectures and labs. While candidates with expertise in any field of biology will be considered, applicants with experience in biostatistics or computational biology, as well as candidates able to teach across multiple disciplines, are especially encouraged. Appointments will be made in one of two categories, the ‘Teacher-Scholar’ track or the ‘Teaching Excellence’ track, depending on candidate qualifications and interests.
Successful candidates will participate in university service roles including undergraduate advising, assessment, and committee work. Duties may also include course coordination and supervision of adjunct faculty in multi-section courses. Ideal candidates will have a record of teaching at the undergraduate level and a demonstrated commitment to the pedagogies of active learning aligning with Jefferson’s signature Nexus Learning approach. Candidates who will thrive in a collaborative, interdisciplinary environment are strongly encouraged. The standard teaching load is 12 credits per semester.
Qualifications
TEACHING EXCELLENCE: While a Ph.D. or foreign equivalent in biology or a closely related field is preferred, candidates with a master’s degree and five years of experience in undergraduate science education will also be considered. An active research program is not required, but research into science pedagogy or basic science research adaptable to the inclusion of undergraduate students is desirable.
TEACHER SCHOLAR: Candidates must possess a Ph.D. or equivalent terminal degree in biology or a closely related field. The candidate should have teaching experience as the ‘instructor of record’ for one or more undergraduate courses. Candidates for the teacher scholar track should be prepared to articulate a research plan that is adaptable to the inclusion of undergraduate students.
To apply, interested applicants must complete the Faculty Employment Application found online at http://hr.jefferson.edu/human-resources.html Job ID # 9300844 and additionally, must submit as single pdf to clsjobs@jefferson.edu an application containing a 1) letter of interest, 2) curriculum vitae, 3) statement of teaching philosophy, 4) a diversity statement, and 5) the contact information of three (3) professional references.
