The Career Advisor is assigned to a portfolio of academic programs and provides students in these majors with career education, advising, and connections to employers. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, providing guidance to students on developing and managing their professional brand; facilitating connections to employers through on-campus recruiting and networking events; educating students on effective job search strategies, and teaching undergraduate courses in Career Exploration, First Year Seminar, or Leadership. The Career Advisor works collaboratively with the Career Connection Center team, Deans, and Academic Program Administrators to develop customized career programming and special events, and cultivates industry employer contacts for student internships and full-time jobs. The Career Advisor utilizes career management technology to reach students and to optimize the provision of career services. This position is campus-based and serves as a member of the Career Connection Center team to support events and initiatives as assigned. 


Education/Experience

Master’s degree in counseling, higher education, or a related field plus four years of experience working within career services or recruiting, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Ability to coach undergraduate and graduate students regarding career development including exploration and job search strategies
  • Expertise related to career development practices, career fields, current employment trends, employment opportunities, and recruiting trends. 
  • Excellent interpersonal and cultural competency skills and demonstrated ability to communicate professionally with diverse constituencies. 
  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaboratively with other members of a team.
  • Ability to teach undergraduate courses related to career and professional development.
  • Demonstrated ability to interact effectively with employers and to cultivate partnerships.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent leadership, team building, organizational, coordination, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to exercise appropriate emotional intelligence and maintain confidentiality.
  • Demonstrated ability to organize dynamic and productive events and workshops.
  • Demonstrated ability to present information, workshops, and seminars in a manner that engages the audience and promotes learning both in person and virtually.
  • Must be a self-starter who will take initiative and receive feedback.
  • Knowledge of job search and career counseling tools.
  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite required.
  • Availability to travel as needed and work evenings and weekends.


Essential Functions

  • Advise students on job search strategies, resume development, interviewing, professional branding, networking, and other elements pertaining to their career and professional success.
  • Administer and interpret career assessments to students and alumni and facilitate their career development.
  • Plan and implement workshops, seminars, and other forms of campus programming and networking events for students and alumni and encourage their engagement and participation in these opportunities.
  • Create and update relevant print and electronic media resources for students to support their career development.
  • Assist in building out and maintaining information and resources for students on the portal and external website.
  • Develop expert knowledge of the assigned academic programs in order to be able to communicate with academic partners and prospective employers on how Stevenson students can meet their talent needs.
  • In collaboration with the Coordinator for Employer Relations, develop standard processes and procedures to identify, cultivate, and secure partnerships with employers that yield employment and experiential opportunities for students and alumni.
  • Research and present current and projected labor market trends of appropriate industries to identify career opportunities for the students of each assigned School or academic program.
  • Conduct outreach to potential employers to create career opportunities and pathways for students. 
  • Collect job placement and internship data and prepare reports and presentations as assigned.
  • Serve as a liaison between employers and faculty to make connections and increase partnerships.
  • Contribute to ongoing and annual assessment activities and reports as directed.
  • Attend industry specific associations and organization activities and events as assigned to better understand their business culture and workforce needs.
  • Serve on higher education, industry professional and career associations, consortiums and other organizations as assigned.
