Position Overview

As a Junior Chemist in the Chemistry Laboratory, you will be responsible for preparing and analyzing samples for antibiotics in wastewater as part of a wastewater epidemiology project. The role involves working with a range of contaminants including opioids, Radionuclides, Metals, and Pesticides.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in chemical or physical science from an accredited institution
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience as an analytical chemist

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct complex chemical analysis on environmental, food, or clinical samples to determine levels of contaminants using advanced instrumentation
  • Adhere to Quality Assurance guidelines and maintain proficiency by passing Proficiency Testing samples
  • Maintain and repair laboratory equipment, ensuring instruments are in good working order
  • Complete necessary paperwork, prepare technical reports, and update standard operating procedures
  • Ensure a safe and organized work environment
  • Train on various analytical procedures within the laboratory
  • Assist supervisor with assigned tasks

Requirements

  • Proficiency in operating sophisticated laboratory equipment such as LC/MS/MS, LC/QTOF, and GC/MS/MS; familiarity with Sciex equipment preferred
  • Effective communication skills
  • Knowledge of good laboratory practices and relevant regulations
  • Profound understanding of analytical, organic, and inorganic chemistry
  • Experience with laboratory safety protocols
  • Understanding of state and federal laws related to the specialty area
  • Ability to design analytical techniques and develop new analysis methods
  • Assist in preparing epidemiological and statistical reports

Work Complexity

The role involves conducting scientific analyses that require accuracy and analytical skill. Handling complex variables and unique sample matrices, the chemist must draw precise conclusions. The position may also involve testifying in judicial proceedings as an expert witness.

Responsibilities

Working as a subject matter expert, the incumbent operates with minimal supervision. While tasks are reviewed for technical accuracy, the work is primarily done independently. The role significantly impacts the surveillance of opioids and other public health substances.

Interactions

Collaborate with supervisors, colleagues, and representatives from various agencies to address analytical issues and interpret federal requirements.
