The Sheriff is seeking an experienced law enforcement professional with demonstrated leadership capabilities to serve as the Sheriff’s Office new Chief Deputy Sheriff. The successful candidate must be a progressive leader who will lead by example and mentor staff. A flexible and forward-thinking candidate that utilizes collaboration to drive success is desired. The Sheriff’s Office rank structure is Deputy Sheriff, Sergeant, Commander, Captain, Chief Deputy, Undersheriff, and Sheriff. Candidates with any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities are qualified. The successful candidate will typically possess an associate’s degree along with two (2) years of paid public law enforcement management experience equivalent to that gained as a Monterey County Sheriff’s Office Commander. A bachelor’s degree is preferred; a master’s degree is highly desirable. Possess at time of appointment, or obtain within 12 months of employment, a valid Basic P.O.S.T. Certificate issued by the California Commission of Peace Officer Standards and Training in order to remain in the position. Candidates must possess or have the ability to obtain a valid California Driver’s License as well as an Advanced Certificate in law enforcement issued by the State of California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training within one year of appointment. Bilingual candidates and candidates who have gone through FBI National Academy, Senior Management Institute for Police, and P.O.S.T. Command College are highly desirable.

The annual salary range for the Chief Deputy Sheriff is $171,408 - $234,114; placement within this range is dependent on qualifications and experience.
