We are looking for a creative and driven Compliance & Engineering Quality Manager to drive a talented, diverse team in the development of new robotic technologies. The successful candidate will inherit a mid-sized team, and is expected to provide direction, prioritization, and career development to a team that is actively engaged in the design, documentation, and testing of mobile and fixed robots and their ancillary components/equipment.


You’ll work with both technical leaders and individual contributors to establish product requirements, guiding the team both in-house and through the guidance of external parties. You’ll push with the team to validate and verify that ORT’s products conform with worldwide regulatory compliance and safety requirements and meet quality criteria necessary to make our products competitive and successful in the market. Therefore, you’ll need to have strong technical expertise and experience in numerous regulatory standards and directives.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide leadership to cross-functional teams to ensure robotic products meet our marketing requirements. Proactively collaborate with engineering project management and design teams, review design data, and develop compliance policies to ensure the Compliance & Engineering Quality team’s expected scope of work is accurately captured in project schedules and timelines.
  • Participate in technical design reviews to (a) determine compliance requirements, (b) communicate those requirements with the project team, (c) participate in design decisions that affect compliance and (d) estimate workload for compliance tasks.
  • Influence product design, quality, testability, and certification efforts in pursuit of safety, compliance, and high quality. Support the team with the generation of New Product Introduction (NPI) process documents and product manual verbiage.
  • Manage and provide support for product evaluations with 3rd parties, both onsite and at external testing labs. Work with Product Development Teams to coordinate availability of samples for testing, aggregation of all required design documentation. Preparation of test Prepare and build test setups and fixtures for testing.
  • Support engineering teams with internal Design Verification Testing (DVT) of functional- and product safety specifications. Coordinate (and perform where necessary) functional testing according to product safety standards. Where appropriate generate detailed test reports and datasheets.
  • Support the team with the performance of hazard analyses and risk assessments for all robotics products (both in development and legacy, as appropriate).
  • Review and approve designs updates, test plans, and verification test reports (NPI). Support legacy products (sustaining), including design updates, feature additions, and field-failure issues. as well as legacy product support.
  • Technically Manage (owning when necessary) authoring of compliance-related project documentation. Provide customer-facing compliance verbiage for technical publication manuals.
  • Create and maintain a compliance database for pre-scans, test reports, technical construction files and reviews, country certificates, Declarations of Incorporation/Conformity (DoI/DoC), and final certifications. Review, update, and ensure accuracy and correctness of all required Agency documentation.
  • Interpret standards, and rulings and challenges agency decisions when appropriate.
  • Guide Product Development Teams through all phases of the Agency certification process. Create process and procedure documents to support certification programs as required. Work with certification bodies, and compliance agencies to obtain and renew certificates, coordinate in-country testing, and ensure ongoing compliance.
  • Coordinate with AME (Manufacturing Engineering) and Operations teams to update product compliance labels with the appropriate country logos and approval numbers.
  • Ensure environmental regulatory standards are met and properly deployed so that projects are completed on time and meet quality, cost, and availability goals.
  • Coordinate with team members to document environmental compliance by completing Omron approval applications and maintaining environmental files.
  • Work with regulatory agencies to understand upcoming changes in environmental regulations, in advance, and the impact to new and legacy products, Communicate these changes to cross-functional teams.


Job Requirements:

  • Graduate degree in Engineering or Bachelor’s degree in Engineering with equivalent experience.
  • 10+ years’ of progressive experience working with commercial products to achieve regulatory certification.
  • Ability to effectively communicate fluidly across technical/management domains.
  • Strong problem-solving abilities; demonstrable experience working through technical issues/conflicts towards resolution and direction (with clear action items for stakeholders).
  • Proven track record of design leadership for product development (concept through launch) preferred.
  • Comfortable with all phases of product development lifecycle including design, implementation, debug, verification & validation, qualification, and transfer to manufacturing.
  • Experience verifying hardware products to comply applicable global product compliance standards (including ISO, UL, CSA, SEMI, KC Mark, EU Machinery Safety, CE mark, RoHS, REACH, Conflict Materials Reporting, Responsible Materials Initiative, etc.).
  • Demonstrable experience working with third-party certifying bodies, testing laboratories in formal certification/verification of key design criteria.
  • Experience with designing for EMC/EMI compliance during development, debugging radiated emissions issues.

The annual salary range for this role in California is $150,000 - $190,000 a year, however, base pay offered may vary depending on geographic region, internal equity, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience among other factors. This position is also eligible for an annual performance-based bonus program. Candidates will be assessed and provided offers against the minimum qualifications of this role and their individual experience.
