Berkeley Lab

Computational Research Scientist

Berkeley Lab Berkeley, CA

The Scalable Solvers Group (SSG) in the Applied Mathematics and Computational Research Division (AMCRD) at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) seeks a Career-Track Research Scientist specializing in multiscale mathematical analysis and numerical methods for quantum many-body problems. The SSG focuses on scalable numerical algorithms and high-performance computing for scientific discovery.

This position will develop new reduced order and quantum embedding models and algorithms and implement high-performance solutions for quantum many-body problems. The Research Scientist will collaborate with a multidisciplinary team of mathematicians, computer scientists, and domain scientists on fast simulation tools and machine learning techniques for DOE science problems. This is an exciting opportunity to pursue independent research.

What You Will Do

  • Develop efficient numerical methods for nonlinear integro-differential equations in quantum many-body systems.
  • Create reduced order models and coarse graining methods for quantum many-body problems.
  • Develop reduced modeling methodologies for non-Markovian stochastic dynamics and conduct systematic analysis.
  • Create rigorous and efficient quantum embedding methods.
  • Perform mathematical analysis of new approximation schemes and establish error bounds.
  • Use machine learning to simplify the simulation of quantum many-body dynamics and open quantum systems.

Additional Responsibilities As Needed

  • Develop efficient data reduction and analytics algorithms.
  • Analyze algorithmic complexity and parallel scalability.
  • Collaborate with physical scientists to deploy algorithms in application software.

What Is Required

  • Ph.D. in Mathematics or related field with expertise in numerical methods and mathematical analysis, or equivalent education and experience.
  • Interdisciplinary teamwork with physical scientists and computational mathematicians.
  • Quantum many-body problems and perturbation theory expertise.
  • Rigorous mathematical analysis of numerical algorithms, establishing practical error bounds.
  • Model reduction and coarse graining techniques, including Mori-Zwanzig framework.
  • Stochastic analysis, multiscale modeling, and quantum embedding methods.
  • Proficient in high-level programming (e.g., C++, Fortran) with parallel computing experience (MPI/OpenMP/OpenACC/CUDA).
  • Effective communication skills.
  • Proven track record in preparing research for publication and seminars.

Desired Qualifications

  • Performance optimization for scientific software.
  • Machine learning expertise.
  • GPU programming with CUDA proficiency.

Notes

  • This is a full-time 2 year, career-track term appointment that may be renewed to a maximum of five years and that may be converted to career based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds, and ongoing operational needs.
  • The full salary range of the Career-Track Research Scientist is between $90,528 to $168,972 annually and is expected to pay between a targeted range of $120,708 to $144,840 annually depending upon the candidate's skills, knowledge, and abilities, including education, certifications, and years of experience.
  • This position may be subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment.
  • This position is eligible for a hybrid work schedule - a combination of teleworking and performing work on site at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA. Work schedules are dependent on business needs. Individuals working a hybrid schedule must reside within 150 miles of Berkeley Lab.
