Contract Fisheries Scientist

Help us serve clients around the globe, through quality science and thoughtful engagement. Ocean Outcomes (O2) is hiring to expand our Services Team, which works on diverse projects including fishery improvement projects (FIPs), fishery sustainability assessments (e.g. based on the Marine Stewardship Council standard), white papers on best practices for fisheries management, and other mission-aligned contract projects. This is an hourly contract position estimated at 30-40 hours per week, at a rate of $45-60 per hour commensurate with experience. This position will initially have a 6 month term with the potential to extend the contract or transition to a full-time staff position for the right person.

You will work with a variety of teams that will include individuals from both inside and outside O2. The person in this position should be adaptable and excited to work on challenging issues and fisheries with diverse stakeholders, including seafood businesses, fishers, academia, NGOs and government.

Key Responsibilities

As part of the O2 Services Team, conduct desktop research and analysis, communicate with clients, and write reports to support various projects, such as:

  • Progress reporting, documents preparation, and other support for FIPs
  • Writing MSC assessments and pre-assessments
  • Research, writing, and recommendations development on sustainable practices for fisheries


Requirements

  • MSc or PhD in fisheries, marine biology, or other related environmental science. Or Bachelor's degree in fisheries, marine biology, or other related environmental science plus 3 to 5 years of relevant work experience
  • Experience applying technical knowledge to address sustainability and social responsibility issues with groups engaged in fishing, from industrial to small scale fisheries
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a remote team, communicate across different platforms, and help with different types of tasks
  • Reliability — do what you say you'll do. Deliver high quality work on time
  • Empathy, respect for diverse perspectives
  • Excellent communication and writing skills in English, ability to work with a geographically dispersed team across time zones
  • Capability to build and maintain professional, equity-centered, relationships with coworkers, stakeholders and clients
  • Ability to travel internationally

What we'd also be excited to see:

  • Real world field and work experience with fisheries, including stakeholder engagement
  • Experience with MSC or FIPs
  • Consulting experience
  • Working ability/fluency in a second language (e.g. Spanish, Mandarin Chinese)
