Job Description

The Fifth Judicial District of the Iowa Judicial Branch is seeking qualified candidates for immediate Court Reporter openings. The position will include travel within the fifth Judicial District, some positions requiring more than others, and may be assigned to work with any Judicial Officer as needed. Compensation includes base salary plus transcript income and State of Iowa benefit package. Starting salary dependent upon relevant courtroom experience.

The starting salary for new State of Iowa Judicial employees is expected to be at the base of the pay range. The pay range is $59,321.60 to $96,803.20.

Hours: Monday – Friday 8:00A – 4:30P

Summary

The 5th Judicial District of the Iowa Judicial Branch is seeking candidates for the court reporter openings with the following Judges:

  • Hon. Judge Franklin, District Associate Judge (Wayne County - 111927)
  • Hon. Judge Greenwood, District Judge (Decatur County - 111941)
  • Hon. Judge Lauber, District Judge (Polk County - 111952 part-time)
  • Hon. Judge Brackey, District Associate Judge (Polk County)
  • Hon. Judge Kemp, District Judge (Polk County - 140179)
  • Hon. Judge Cox, District Associate Judge (Polk County)
  • Hon. Judge Faith (formerly Hefner), District Court Judge (Dallas County)

Responsibilities

Job duties include but are not limited to:

  • Captures court testimony and proceedings with stenography machine.
  • Reads back court testimony and proceedings upon request.
  • Prepares transcripts, performs general office work.
  • Marks and records exhibits during court proceedings.
  • Performs related work as determined by Judge, Chief Judge or designee.
  • Electronic document filing required in all counites within District 5.
  • May be required to work for any Judicial Officer in the 5th District per operational needs.
  • May require travel

Positions in this class are exempt from the screening and referral requirements of the Iowa Department of Administrative Services - Human Resources Enterprise.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Graduation from an accredited high school (or High School Equivalency) and graduation from a school of court reporting.

Must be certified by the Iowa Board of Shorthand Reporters within 12 months of employment, and certification must be maintained as a condition of employment. Certification demonstrates proficiency based on the standard of the National Court Reporters Association for the earned designation of Registered Professional Reporter or the National Verbatim Reporters Association for the earned designation of Certified Verbatim Reporter.

Court Reporter will purchase and maintain court reporting software and stenotype machines and/or verbatim recording equipment.
