Primary Purpose Of Organizational Unit
The UNC Institute for the Environment (IE) has a multifaceted mission: (1) To strengthen environmental research capacity across UNC by supporting a multi-disciplinary community of scholars that enhances collaboration, increases sharing of knowledge, and identifies solutions to the world’s critical environmental problems. Position Summary
This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement that may include a partially remote work location, consistent with System Office policy. UNC Chapel Hill employees are generally required to reside within a reasonable commuting distance of their assigned duty station.
The Currituck Research Technician will assist with processing and analyzing data from the Carolina Drone Lab’s summer field campaigns in Currituck Sound. The Research Technician will assist with field campaign to include mission planning, conducting drone flights, and collecting ground truthing information. The position will process and analyze data collected during field events and assist with AI/ML softwares for detection of submerged aquatic vegetation
There is also the potential to accompany lab members for fall data collection if the schedule allows. They will also assist with day-to-day operations of the drone lab by participating in selected meetings, assisting with required maintenance items, and others duties.
Minimum Education And Experience Requirements
Demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, And Experience
Knowledge on Geographic Information Systems
Basic understanding of key environmental issues impacting coastal communities
Ability to work outside for multiple hours
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, And Experience
Student associated with E3P or interest in environmental issues.
Drone flying experience preferred, not required
