Designer (National Geographic)

At National Geographic, we are looking for a detailed designer that can collaborate with our team while leveraging the renowned imagery and dynamic stories we are known for. In this role, you must possess outstanding design skills and the ability to effectively collaborate with members of our graphics, cartography, photography, and other special publications departments to plan, shape, design and produce our highest quality issues. If you have strong conceptual skills, a passion for finding creative solutions, all while demonstrating a sophisticated eye for design and typography – this might be the role for you!

Responsibilities:


  • Plan, shape, design and produce layouts for National Geographic Magazine, bookazines, special issues, and, of course, National Geographic Kids
  • Commission illustrators and collaborate closely with the editorial and photography departments
  • Act as a resource for colleagues with less experience by mentoring and offering creative feedback and direction
  • Partner with the production department to color proof and ensure quality of product
  • Continuously communicate effectively with managers, peers, and other project stakeholders
  • Occasionally partner with our UX and interactive teams to develop innovative concepts for our audiences


Basic Qualifications:


  • 3+ years relevant experience in a design focused role
  • Keen eye for typography
  • Solutions-based mindset and keen problem-solving skills
  • Effective communication skills
  • Self-Starter with strong ability to manage timelines
  • Ability to build rapport and collaborate with many different stakeholders


Preferred Qualifications:


  • Previous publishing or editorial design experience
  • Digital / UX experience


Required Experience:


  • Bachelor’s degree in relevant field or equivalent work experience


The hiring range for this position in Washington, D.C is $63,400 to $85,000 per year. The base pay actually offered will take into account internal equity and also may vary depending on the candidate’s geographic region, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience among other factors. A bonus and/or long-term incentive units may be provided as part of the compensation package, in addition to the full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits, dependent on the level and position offered.
