Digital Content Editor

Position Summary

This is a new position being formed to drive internal-facing marketing and communication to current students and to identify and write student success stories. The successful candidate will be expected to work collaboratively with the web/UI designer to create a new weekly e-news for enrolled students. The new publication will feature important deadlines for current students (advising, registration, application for graduation, etc.), news of interest, event highlights, and new academic programs. Some news will be repurposed from other publications, and some will be written exclusively for the new publication. The new editor will carry technical responsibility for extending the Slate constituent relationship management system to include current students and other internal stakeholders. (S)he may also be expected to help with editorial duties and content production on the HC.edu website, other newsletters and The Pillars printed magazine. The digital content editor will also be responsible for identifying student success stories, writing them and preparing them for publication across a variety of communication channels including web, email, and social.

Job Responsibilities

  • With an eye to student engagement and progression, compile, write and edit content — both original and submitted ideas — for the Campus Connections student edition e-news on a weekly basis.
  • Lead acquisition, creation or selection of photographs, images, graphics, videos and infographics to support text. Guide the development of these supporting elements by working collegially with the web/UI designer, university photographer and/or web developer.
  • Prepare email lists of current students and other internal audiences on Slate which may require collaboration with the undergraduate admission director or Information Technology Services staff.
  • Conduct testing of the e-news before it distributes, including engaging a co-worker for a proofing round and quality testing on both desktop and mobile devices.
  • Maintain an editorial calendar for time-sensitive news of interest to current students.
  • Produce the Campus Connections student edition draft on Slate, working collaboratively with the digital content editor and web/UI designer.
  • Develop and maintain professional relationships with staff in advising, student records, financial aid, student success and other departments who can inform the content of the e-news to students.
  • Working collaboratively with staff and faculty, identify student success stories. Write and prepare them for publication across web, email and social platforms and also raise suitable stories with video production personnel.
  • Assist with writing and editing for the HC.edu website, other mass emails, and The Pillars printed magazine. Review popular HC.edu web pages to fact check, link check, update for accuracy and relevance, and improve their appeal and user-friendliness.

Qualifications

  • Three to five years demonstrated experience writing and editing in a corporate setting (e-newsletter experience preferred).
  • One year of experience with Slate or similar constituent relationship management system.
  • Exceptional editorial skills including the ability to both conceive new web pages or emails and guide the work of a web/UI designer and/or developer to design and produce.
  • Demonstrated storytelling experience within a corporate marketing or communication office.
  • Higher education experience preferred.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated excellent written communication skills.
  • Good verbal and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Three to five years experience with Microsoft Office, especially Word and Outlook.
  • Bachelor's degree preferably in journalism, English, communications, marketing or a related field.
  • Wordpress experience preferred.
